Game Description:
This was the NES blockbuster title of all time. It helps that its debut (for the U.S. market, anyway) was in the film The Wizard, which was probably terrible. Anyway, so many of SMB’s mainstays appear here. Every SMB game that has came afterward has to owe something to this game.
The controls for this game have remained largely the same as its predecessors. You can walk, run, and jump. For the first time, you can also slide down a slope, knocking out enemies with your feet. However, there’s a lot more to it than that. Through the use of various powerups, you can now throw hammers, swim really well, or even fly (as well as the prerequisite fireball throwing). For the first time in SMB history, you have an overworld map and the ability to go through levels non-linearly. You can also use items from this mode, another first for SMB. There are plenty of new enemies and bosses are now varied and play out more.
The graphics for this game are much better than its predecessors’, with more detailed sprites, and prettier looking at that. It all looks so much grander, more menacing sometimes, than the original SMB ever could hope for.
The sound for this has also received an overhaul. There are few sound effects, but they’re used well. However, the soundtrack for this game has also been well received and remembered, with the BGM for the Airship stages usually getting remixed and reused often.
The story for this game is that Bowser (or King Koopa, whatever his name is at this point) has kidnapped Princess Toadstool (or Peach, again) and to boot, has transformed each world’s king to something different. On top of that, he’s gotten his Koopalings to guard each world for him. What that means is that the world of Super Mario Bros. has practically been completely taken over overnight and it’s up to Mario (and Luigi) to rescue (or skip) each world’s king and finally defeat Bowser and rescue the princess.
