Urban Champion

Nintendo Entertainment System

Game Description:

Urban Champion. It’s a story about two guys that don’t like each other but like the same girl. This game skips all the drama and gets right to the good part. The fight, and fight they do, for three to five rounds until one of the guys get knocked into a manhole while the victor gets showered with confetti from the blue haired object of their affections.

The player controls the character with blue hair while the computer or second player takes control of the guy with green hair. The fight through a total of six city backdrops that are part of a city block. They beat the daylights while avoiding getting caught by the occasional cop car and getting a flower pot dropped on their heads by an angry shopkeeper.

The graphics are on the poor side as at that time there were other fighting games like Yi Ar Kung Fu and Street Fighter with a much wider variety of characters that you can fight.

The controls are a little dodgy, and not very responsive. You press up or down to block punches and control whether you hit to the face or the body. There is no jumping or kicking, just one button for a weak punch and one button for a strong punch.

The sound is nothing something special and the song only changes when the round begins or when one of the players is danger of being knocked into a manhole. Urban Champion is one of the first games to come out for the NES. Its concept is simple, two guys that don’t like each other fighting to impress a pretty girl.

The winner does muscle poses while the girl showers him with confetti.

The game has no real ending so as long as the player keeps winning the player can keep playing, otherwise it’s back to the title screen.

This was part of the first wave of NES games but this wasn’t one of the NES’s best outings.
