Game Review (by Garoth Moulinoski):
For a game that wasn’t originally part of the Super Mario Bros. franchise, this game did a lot to influence the series. See, this game was originally the Japanese game called Doki Doki Panic (something like Nervous Panic, or Heart Thumping Panic) and it was completely separate from Mario. It had different characters and an overall Arabian theme. Somewhere along the line, that game was brought to the international market with a Mario skin. Apparently, the creators liked the reskin enough to bring this game into Mario canon.
Anyway, enough exposition- have at you!
The gameplay is great, although it will confuse anyone who’s coming from another Super Mario Bros. game. The basic functions are the same as its predecessor- you can walk, run, and jump all the same. However, this time, you can pick up vegatables and other things including enemies in order to defeat enemies. You cannot jump on enemies to defeat them this time around (but you can jump on them to hitch a ride or grab them). It’s strange to anyone coming in from another SMB but it’s not a big problem once you get used to it. A new addition, and something that we won’t get to see until Super Mario 64 DS, is that now, you can select other characters to play as other than Mario and Luigi. Each character has different strengths and weaknesses and by utilizing their strengths, you may open up different routes or make a boss battle easier.
The graphics for this game are good. You can tell what everything is, and it feels like it’s a big step up from the first game.
The sound for this game are limited, yet they work. Either way, they’re much more varied than SMB, both sound effects and soundtrack.
The story for this game is… Actually, I never knew. There’s this weird toad guy called Wart who you have to fight to beat the game. I guess he kidnapped some of those wacky Toad people. Hmm… A toad kidnapping Toads. Anyway, if it isn’t that, he’s trying to take over the world. It doesn’t matter, you won’t care. The point is to run and jump around.
I’d recommend this game to anyone who likes platformers. Anyone familiar with the Gameboy Donkey Kong aren’t has a grasp on some of the controls and mechanics. Of course, fans of the Mario series will like this game, but chances are they already played this game.
