Game Review - by (wraith)
Cyber Knight is a really interesting game. It kinda fools you into thinking it’s a sci-fi/mecha RPG with the traditional 8/16-bit RPG engine. Hell, looking at the screenshots of the overworld, you might be inclined to think it uses a similar engine to Phantasy Star 2. But that’s just the overworld. Once you get into a battle, it’s definitely a strategic game. The battles are waged on a 6×6 grid. Your fighters have missile and melee attacks, and essentially you move your men about and attack in a manner that doesn’t wind up with your mechas getting obliterated. The battles are more involved than your standard RPG fare, and resultedly are a little slow-paced. So those of you who like Final Fantasy and Dragon Warrior–where you can fly through a battle by hitting the accept button repeatedly–might not like this. The graphics are a bit dated, even for 1993. The sound is rather nice, however. And the game play is decent. So, if you have a grain or two of patience, this game will make for an enjoyable experience.

Been really skeptical of trying this game. Mainly because I thought it was going to be another standard strategy RPG. Not that I don’t like strategy based RPGs, I just get bored with them after extended gameplay. Anyway, I have heard some good things about this game and its sequel, but have still been trying to build myself up to trying it. On a bored day I sucked it up and found that I was quite wrong about what I thought this game was going to be like.
It is a science fiction RPG involving robots and being lost in space. You explore many different planets in an attempt to found out how to make it back to Earth.
The game has several different ways you have to play. You control your ship which has several people you can put in your party. Each person can pick a robot to control. You can also heal up for free on your ship along with reloading all your ammo. There is than your standard RPG explore mode in which you explore planets, towns, various dungeons, etc. And than there is battle mode which begins in the same vain as many other RPGs, by simply walking around and waiting for a battle to start. Battles are quite different than normal RPG fair. It is sort of set on a grid. Think of much smaller than Live a Live’s battle grid (but still similar). Battle isn’t a whole lot different as you move your character across the grid to get to the enemy and destroy them before they destroy you. You get all sorts of weapons from short range to long range. It’s all really easy and actually a lot of fun once when you know what everything is and can do.
It is quite obvious that this was an early game for the system as the graphics show. But there is a lot that you can do in the game, so nothing is ever boring.
The translation is good for what it is, but is still fairly simple and some dialog is just flat and emotionless. It’s ok as the story is sort of rehashed, reminding me of Star Trek or Battlestar Galactica.
It is not a terribly difficult game to play but a lot of fun with the game becoming increasingly nonlinear as you play on. Certainly worth the time to at least play for a few hours here and there.
