I was finally able to 100% complete Wario Land with this DX hack. There are quite a few points to go over with it:

1) The majority of the level’s color selection seems really solid. The contrast of colors and choice for each world is quite neat. The only caveat with this is that one cave palette that looks still too gray for a DX hack, everything else in terms of levels seemed fine!

2) The hack could really use some rework when it comes to the characters palettes. Most of the enemy characters use the same base color for the whole character, being one color a light tone and the second a darker shade of it. Some two coloured palettes for enemies would greatly improve the presentation. Wario’s and other main character palettes could also use a good rework hacking-wise, as they do have some oddly colored portions of their body due to the palette limitation (splitting the sprites could help here)

3) There are some major bugs/glitches regarding some bosses. For me, I encountered a graphical glitch with the Bird boss, and two full freeze glitches at the Penguin and the Genie bosses. These really need to be addressed.

4) This might have been on my end, so take this one lightly. I played using the mGBA core on RetroArch 1.10.2, and for reason I was struggling to get the game to save on SRAM. I only got it to save twice, once during the first beach boss, and a 2nd when I got the freeze glitch on the Penguin boss. After that, the game didn’t save anymore even after defeating the final boss, so resetting the game or relying on its normal save behaviour isn’t working for me. I’m unsure if this is an issue with mGBA/RetroArch or the DX hack itself. I’ll try to test on other emus.

With these points made, the hack is still enjoyable and a good colorization overall. I encourage the creator (or anyone else with the knowledge and interest) to tackle the issues listed in this and the other reviews, and with that, this will be a no brainer high recommendation. At this moment, it gets a “Recommended… with some caveats” summary.
