It Really Works

An excellent tool I have been using since the past year. While it doesn’t provide everything to edit (text, event, etc.), it provides enough to satisfy me with what I can do with it. Text is not hard to edit via a hex editor for this game. I’m sad to hear from another source that says this tool is discontinued from any more updates.

If you are going to use this, don’t forget to create backups for the ROM. While great, the tool isn’t perfect. I would advise against editing anything in the Color dungeon, because in doing so breaks the game. Break as in the game freezes if you pick up a temporary item (acorn, Piece of Power).

Another game-breaking error (not the fault of the tool) is obtaining the secret medicine from a chest before meeting Marin at the beach. In doing so will freeze the game when you pick her up from the beach. So if you want to put secret medicine in a chest, make sure it’s at the point any time after the encounter with her at the beach. It does not matter when you obtain the medicine from Crazy Tracy.

If you edit the overworld and save, Level 1 exit warp will be saved to set as ‘outside.’ That’s the stairs you exit to obtain the Roc’s feather. Going back in will take you outside on the mountain where you will be stuck and unable to move. So whenever you save your overworld data, go to Level 1 data and set ‘outside’ back to ’side-scroller’ warp and save.

If you edit the collision on the overworld map, it won’t show until you click Overlay then back to Collision to see. If you edit the warp data in the dungeon or indoor data, sometimes you may need to uncheck ‘Has Warp’ then check it back to really confirm the change before you save. In the case for the overworld warp data, clicking between ‘Overlay’ and ‘Collision’ may confirm the warp change if it failed you.

That’s all I have to say. It’s pretty forward with what you can do with it, especially after you get the hang of it. Heed to my warnings and I give this tool my highest recommendation.
