Hordes of Nei

Hack of Phantasy Star

Description:

This is a thorough alteration of Phantasy Star for the Sega Master System to make it better tie-in with the rest of the classic Phantasy Star series. Nearly every piece of equipment has a different attack or defense value, many cost more, some items have been overhauled, some are only found from battles with boss monsters. The monsters now come at you in large numbers, so be prepared to fight the Hordes to get where you are going. As for Nei… that is for the player to discover!

Features:

  • Every single piece of equipment has a use! If something costs a great deal of money, it is worth it.
  • The restorative spells, (Heal and Cure) and items, (Cola and Burger) are now more potent and require more MP/Meseta to compensate.
  • All the guns do more damage.
  • Many of the shops have different items for sale.
  • The following items are no longer in the game: Wand, Needle Gun, Silver Fang, Ceramic Sword, Iron Shield, Laser Shield, and Light Suit. The items that replace these are FAR better.
  • All four of the player characters have been greatly changed to better represent their roles in the party.
  • Alis and Myau have new Spells.
  • Finally, the monsters have all been edited to keep a challenging level of play throughout, including having different combat skills, and nearly all drop more money to buy the new ultimate equipment.
  • New graphics for characters and vehicles!
  • Some dialogue fixes and renamed Noah: Lutz!

Same stuff, different flavor

Essentially this should be called a ‘rebalancing and hardtype’ hack. That’s what it is. The story is pretty much left untouched (nothing wrong with that), but considering that SMSPower! did a really *incredibly awesome* retranslation of this game for the Japanese version, you get to listen to the much-superior Mark 3’s music rather than the tinny-sounding audio here.

Its a matter of preference but I had to mute the audio when playing this just cause it got on my nerves so easily. Its just a WORLD of difference. The dialogue/text is virtually untouched, except for a few name changes and some other minor stuff I didn’t notice.

I highly recommend skipping this and playing the SMSPower! translation instead. Much easier-to-read font, far-superior music, and the retranslated story actually makes sense! No more obscure item abbreviations either!

Plus, your ‘First Food’ shop is actually a Pharmacy (hence all those vials in the shop). That makes much more sense :)

This hack would be way better if it had been made compatible with the retranslation. As it is though, not worth it for all but the most hardcore of PS1 lovers.
