Star Fox Super FX 21 MHz Mode

Hack of Star Fox

This patch changes Star Fox from using the Super FX chip in 10 MHz mode to 21 MHz mode. On hardware the patch is compatible with the GSU-1, GSU-2 and GSU2-SP1 revisions of the Super FX chip. All testers have reported a noticeable difference in speed.

An impressive hack, and a great improvement to the game. But it must be noted that Star Fox was not designed for the SuperFX 1 in the first place; it was designed for the “MARIO” chip. This was the original version of the SuperFX, which ran at half the speed of the SuperFX 1 and 2. (I guess you could call it the SuperFX 0.) There’s actually no difference between the SuperFX 1 and 2 besides the ROM sizes they support: SuperFX 1 = 1MB maximum, SuperFX 2 = 2MB max.

Some Star Fox cartridges out there do have a SuperFX 1 inside; those carts were made after other SuperFX games started coming out and the “MARIO” chip was retired, since Star Fox was the only game to use it. (Each SuperFX was backwards-compatible with the earlier model.)

For what it’s worth, Star Fox 2 was designed for (and runs just fine on) the SuperFX 1. I realize this is all pretty messy and confusing but thought it was worth pointing out nevertheless. Just think of this patch as an upgrade from SuperFX 0 to 1, instead of from SuperFX 1 to 2. :)
