A fantastic hack with a few minor issues

Reviewed By: PsxFan107 on 04 Nov 2021

Please forgive me for sounding a bit out of touch throughout this review because I, unfortunately, have not see the animated film the hack was based on nor am I completely familiar with the songs in the soundtrack.

This hack is the complete package: new levels, new graphics, and a fantastic new soundtrack. I was very excited for this hack when it was in development (namely because it looked so damn cool) and boy did it deliver.

It was super exciting to immediately start a completely fresh new level, with new graphics and the awesome new Beatles soundtrack.

I really loved how well the soundtrack fit in with the levels. Each level had a track that fit with the vibe it gave off. The levels were a bit tough but generally well balanced in terms of difficulty save for at least one (which I’ll get to later). The extra starting lives and continues as well as the plentiful extra hit points and lives made for a nice buffer to the hack’s added challenge.

Also, the credits sequence was freaking amazing!

With all the praise in order, I now move on to my few (very few at that) issues with this hack.

The first is the yellow submarine in 1-2. It is comprised of multiple platforms which one can unknowingly pass through and die because it is almost impossible to tell where they start and end. Embarrassingly enough, this happened to me once or twice when I first discovered this. This could be remediated by either outlining the platforms or adding solid blocks to prevent the player from falling through them.

The second was a crash that occurred in 5-3. I threw either a bomb or exploding enemy (can’t remember which) between some explode-able blocks and had the game crash followed by a CPU halt error from Nestopia UE. I know this is not an emulator specific issue as its core is in active development and is up to date as of August of this year. Thank god I save stated at the start of world 5 or I probably would have dropped this hack for a while.

Now, my third and final issue, and this is the biggest problem I had with this hack. When I played the first bit of 6-1, I noticed it seemed a bit familiar. As I played further into the level, my hunch was confirmed. This level is an amalgamation, modification and dumbing down of levels 2-1 and 3-2 of GlitchCat7’s SMB2 hack Return to Subcon. For those who don’t know, Return to Subcon is a kaizo (highest degree) difficulty hack. That hack had a per level save system because its levels are too brutal for the standard continue system. This hack being based on plain SMB2 and having a non-kaizo difficulty had no business having a kazio level in it. The excuse here was that the level was at the start of the world instead of later on so the player couldn’t wall on world 6 because of it.

The worst offence here is that GlitchCat7 is given no credit for his work.

I was disappointed to see the hack’s originality sacrificed here in favor of an artificial difficulty spike. Even with the modifications made, the level was still frustrating and not very enjoyable. I kept getting stranded on the platform with the key and having to die and restart the area. As a result of these deaths, I ended up clutching the final boss with a single life left.

It would be nice if this level could be replaced in a future patch with an original level that fit properly with the hack’s design and difficulty.

Overall, for those who loved the original SMB2 and those who are fans of the Beatles should definitely pick this one up. Despite the small number of problems it has, it is truly one of the best SMB2 hacks to date.
