Ys IV: Mask of the Sun

Super Nintendo

Game Description:

Ys IV: Mask of the Sun is an action role playing game for the Super Nintendo.

Translation Description:

If you’ve played Ys 1 or Ys 2 (probably more 2), you’ll be right at home! It plays pretty similarly to those games, you know. Run into an enemy head-on and die, that kind of thing. It’s basically the same game, except the graphics are just a tiny bit nicer looking. Which is to be expected, you know, for an early SNES title in part of an ongoing NES series. Just look at DQ5 and FF4, you know? Thankfully the game still rocks ass, so you’ll have a good time with it.

UPDATE [February 3, 2007] - Gideon means business with this 2.0 release. A completely rewritten script, new and improved font, and it now works on copiers. It’s complete, it’s polished, and it works. What more can you ask for? If you haven’t given this a try yet, what are you waiting for?

Absolutely stellar

Since Aeon Genesis’s translation already has other reviews, I’ll keep this short and simply say that this is one of the most professional and well-done fan translations I’ve ever seen. It looks so crisp and so slick, and I didn’t encounter a single typo, grammatical issue, or even one bit of cringeworthy writing.

I played v2.00 of the patch, and encountered the three minor dialogue-box bugs Het_Nkik described in his 2012 review. This is entirely my own stupidity, as these were addressed in the 2013 update to v2.10. My fault for playing an older version (and a reset/reload fixed everything anyway).

The only other bug I remember is that, if you get changed into monster form and speak to other monsters, you keep saying something about how “I already have this item”. It wouldn’t surprise me if this was fixed in v2.10 as well.

As for the underlying game, I enjoyed the first 75% of it, but by the time I got to the last part, the backtracking and pathfinding within the final areas got to be too much. I’m not a big fan of the last boss fights either, especially since you have to wade through a ton of dialogue every time you reload. But Ys games often have weak or tedious endings, so it’s to be expected.

We’re very lucky to have a translation done with such skill, and so much obvious care spent in getting things just right. Kudos!
