Interesting hack.

Reviewed By: firedropdl on 16 Sep 2020

I’ve played several official upgraded versions of FFI over the years and it’s been so long since I played the original NES version that I can’t even say for sure that I’ve ever played a hacked version all the way through until now.

I don’t think that even hacked I could ever sit through this game without the fast-forward and save state functions of an emulator in 2020, but with them this hack keep things interesting enough to play to the end.

I used cheat codes on Chaos at the end. Two Cure 4’s out of him brought back all the memories of the frustrations with OG NES titles. Limited spell casts and the level 50 cap on the NES version didn’t pose any issues at all until you have to do the boss rush and not have too much magic at the end. Plus, who could forget that the heal items in FFI were such a joke by end game compared to other games in the series. And the whole time you’re playing the game you have to deal with that “ineffective” message every time one of your characters goes and swings at thin air instead of just hitting the next one that you didn’t kill yet.

If nostalgia for the game that started it all can trump your frustrations with the game mechanics from 1987, this hack along with all of the others that were put in along with it will at least make it quite a bit more interesting and playable than the original version is in 2020.

Thanks for sharing.
