Kaeru no Tame ni Kane wa Naru

Game Boy

Game Description:

You play as the Prince of Sable. Princess Tiramisu has been kidnapped, Prince of Sable and his friend Prince Richard go to save her. A witch turns them into frogs, which complicates things. This game has the same engine as Link’s Awakening. A funny and unusual game.

Translation Description:

This is an unofficial English translation in the .ips format.

Kaeru no Tame ni Kane wa Naru, or For the Frog the Bell Tolls has you take on the role of the impetuous but good-natured Prince of Sable. As the Prince, you must save Princess Tiramisu and the desert and frog themed land of Mille-Feuille from the evil Lord Delarin…and do before your rival, the valiant Prince Richard, beats you to it.

Gameplay is a mix of platforming action and simple RPG elements. The engine for this game went on to be used for Link’s Awakening, and many plot elements were borrowed for later Zelda games.

A well-done translation for a well-written game.

For the Frog the Bell Tolls is quite a fun little game. There’s not that much to it gameplay-wise and it’s overall rather easy with just a few tricky parts (although the side-scrolling sections are pretty fun), but it’s pretty decent and being rather short, it doesn’t overstay its welcome. The main draw is, surprisingly enough, the writing. It’s quite funny and gives it a lot of personality, rarely seen in such an old Game Boy game.

As such, it’s all the more important that it gets a good translation, that makes the writing shine. And I’m happy to say that this is the case with here. Everything is understandable, the characters are well-represented and the dialogue is appropriately amusing with nothing standing out negatively. Adding to that, I didn’t find any glaring errors. I also like the font choice that makes it similar to Link’s Awakening, emphasizing the connection between the two games.

Overall, it’s a very good and professional-looking translation, that I wholeheartedly recommend.
