Mortal Kombat Champion Edition

Hack of Mortal Kombat

Description:

Just as Street Fighter II Champion Edition allowed players to fight as the four unplayable characters of Street Fighter II, Mortal Kombat Champion Edition allows players to fight as the three unplayable characters of Mortal Kombat: Reptile, Goro and Shang Tsung!!

The three hidden characters are accessed by inputting special codes on the select screen. Please see the README file for these codes, and for the hidden character move list.

Patching Requirements:

This patch requires a Headered ROM. If you apply this patch to an unheadered ROM, you will find that the game locks in a black screen at start up. If you have this problem, I would advise doing the following:

1. Check the ROM SHA-1 and the ROM CRC32 of of your unpatched MK ROM, with the ROM Hasher (found here: https://www.romhacking.net/utilities/1002/) and verify that the ROM SHA-1 and the ROM CRC32 match those in the ROM /ISO Information field on this page.

2. Once you have verified that your ROM has the above two properties, use NSRT (found here: https://www.romhacking.net/utilities/400/) to add a header to the ROM. It doesn’t matter if you choose the “Add NSRT Headers to the selected” option or the “Add headers to selected” option.

3. Apply the patch to the newly headered ROM. This new ROM should now work, and you should see “MORTAL KOMBAT CHAMPION EDITION BY SNARK-4918. 2019″ at the bottom of the opening credits screen as an indication that the patch was successfully applied. Note that the screen takes a few seconds to load, so please be patient.

Not A Flawless Victory But It's Solid

Reviewed By: Eldrethor on 30 Nov 2019

This patch does exactly what it seeks to do, and it gets the job done wonderfully. All three characters are easy to access with the Select button, and they can go through the Tournament mode without any game-breaking crashes.

What surprised me most about this patch was that this reveals that the bosses are not as overpowered as the AI makes them out to be. For example, Goro hits like a dump truck but his punches are slow to the point where they can easily be interrupted mid-swing. Both he and Shang Tsung are also unable to walk backwards and jump like a normal character, which limits their mobility. Reptile has the advantage of having both Sub-Zero and Scorpion’s movesets, but switching between them in the heat of battle can be tricky.

As Snark stated, there are graphical glitches when doing mirror matches with the boss characters, and while it’s an eyesore, they’re functionally fine for the most part. My only criticism is that Goro feels exceptionally sluggish, to the point of unresponsive, when pitting him against his glitchy shadowy mirror match, and I can’t tell if the AI is simply faster or if my button presses really weren’t registering.

Another nice touch was having access to The Pit stage, which I don’t recall being accessible in the base game unless you got Reptile to challenge you. I also appreciate the nod to the Mortal Kombat movie, where you have to highlight Johnny Cage to get Goro, and Liu Kang to get Shang Tsung. Sub-Zero for Reptile is also easy to remember, since it’s one ninja for another.

While there’s definitely room for polish, this is a nice way to experiment with the bosses, and the implementation works very nicely. If the graphical glitches can be cleaned up, then this patch would be absolutely perfect, but even as is, it’s a solid hack.
