Chrono Trigger: Bugfix and Uncensoring Patch

Hack of Chrono Trigger

Description:

This patch is geared towards fixing bugs and patching up script inconsistencies or censorship. The aim is to preserve the original translation while generally improving the game as a whole.

  • Completely decapitalized names in dialogue.
  • No more indentation of normal dialogue in textboxes.
  • MSU-1 compatibility!
  • Fixes to gameplay bugs, such as Targeting AI.
  • You can now enter names smaller than the maximum amount of characters without issue.
  • Restoration of alcohol, prayer, entities, you name it!
  • Magus is now known as The Fiendlord by NPCs in 1000AD and 600AD, and Mystics are now Fiends.
  • Minor restoration of points Chrono Cross brings up that were present in the original, just not in the localization.

If you have been playing previous editions before the version number says “rebuilt” or are using a save from elsewhere such as an unpatched game, listen up: saves made after Mystic Mountain is first visited that did not use the CronoNick patch are not compatible, as the game will glitch out when viewing Falcon Hit’s description or some of Ayla’s lines. Saves between current patch versions are 100% compatible.

This was originally an addendum to Chrono Trigger’s already existing dialogue related bugfix patch. There are still many fixes from here contained within.

A lot of hard work shows

Reviewed By: TheMagus on 16 Nov 2019

While this romhack does have some changes that I may not like subjectively (Fiendlord/Fiends vs. Magus/Mystics; Law of the Earth vs Rule of Life; etc). I find the amount of hard work Chronosplit, and the rest of the gang of helpers over on the forum, have put into this romhack is very commendable. I feel that it’s the only romhack currently out for the SNES CT that is worth even considering.

Even if there are some things in this patch that you don’t quite agree with, it is a great base to use in TFlux to change to your liking. For example I personally restored the chapter names and some other enemies/items/weapons that were personal preferences. Doing a complete overhaul from scratch is a terrible task to take on (trust me I had begun and given up several times). [Side Note: as of 11/15/2019, the Chrono Compendium copy of this mod doesn't contain the Fiend/Fiendlord change if you don't want to change/revert those particular pieces]

Chronosplit has done a good job of restoring censored content in this mod as well. Once again you will find Flea’s Bra, Ayla will flirt with anything that moves, and you can develop a primeval hangover. Plus some other minor references have been restored in multiple places that seemed to be missed or altered for the US release. Some changes are very limited to space constraints and this romhack does its best with those constraints (Toma’s Pop - Toma’s Ale). Usually Chronosplit posts issues to the forum to get feedback from other users which is also a big plus.

One of the largest and most appreciated changes that Chronosplit has done in this romhack, however, is the cleanup of the dialog boxes. I personally like the nostalgic look of the BIG CAPPED NPC NAMES, but I can definitely say the dialog is way cleaner the way he has presented it without indentations everywhere.

Overall, I’d recommend this mod to anyone who doesn’t have issue with some changes that don’t quite match the SNES exactly, and to those that’d like to make their own subjective changes with TFlux. This is the best romhack to base your personal changes off of.

Thanks Chronosplit, Mauron, and others who put work into this.
