Gaia's Navel With the Girl Without Doubling Back

Hack of Secret of Mana

This patch is an extremely minor quality of life improvement which resolves an annoying catch 22 near the beginning of a playthrough: If you get the girl before the sprite and you go to the Haunted Forest, you will get turned back for want of an axe from Gaia’s Navel. But if you go to Gaia’s Navel first, the girl doesn’t understand why you’d want to go there and she forces you to uselessly go to the Haunted Forest first only to get turned back for want of an axe from Gaia’s Navel.

With this patch applied, the girl will not force you to go to the Haunted Forest before Gaia’s Navel. You can go straight to Gaia’s Navel without any fuss.

Important things to note:

  • Apply this to an unheadered ROM.
  • How to combine this with the Variable Width Font hack: 1. Apply VWF, 2. Remove header, 3. Apply Gaia’s Navel With the Girl Without Doubling Back, 4. Apply Gaia’s Navel With the Girl Without Doubling Back VWF support.
  • How to combine this with Relocalized: 1. Apply Relocalized, 2. Apply Gaia’s Navel With the Girl Without Doubling Back, 3. Apply Gaia’s Navel With the Girl Without Doubling Back Relocalized support.

It may be minor, but it has a big heart!

Okay, so maybe storyline-wise, the Girl refusing to go to the goddamn Dwarf Village makes sense. But who in their right mind would put up with the shoddy gameplay that results from this restriction? In this day and age?! I doubt it…

With stuff like this, I’m amazed this game was in any reviewer’s Top 10 along with Final Fantasy VI or Chrono Trigger, back in the day.

Well, there’s much to be said nowadays for QoL improvements, since not every gamer has all the free time in the world, to fiddle-a** around with quite that many annoyances. Patch this in and you’ll never have to be bothered again, with either skipping the Goblin cutscene or forcing your way past those wretched little bowmen. (I’ve got 5000 of the sods buried in my backyard, just so you know how much I despise them. }:D )

I am a true fan of how the Creator of this patch, and many others for Secret of Mana, brainstorms and designs his mods. No doubt about it, he does this because he cares about the game. Inspiring…
