Heracles no Eikou II: Titan no Metsubo

Nintendo Entertainment System

Game Description:

Damn Nintendo of America and their damned anti-RPG ways. If not for the Big N, maybe this gem of series (which consist of two Nes, two Snes, and one Gameboy game, possibly more on the next-gen systems) may have seen the light of day in North America.

Anyway, The Glory of Heracles 2 is truly a feather in Data East’s cap (Which is certainly a plus given that they are the company that produces the abomination known as Bad Dudes). What Heracles 2 does is basically take the game engine behind Dragon Warrior 2, improve the graphics, add a dash of Greek Mythology and mix it all up. Sure, maybe the geography isn’t quite right (Athens and Minoa, on the same landmass? Where’s Crete?), and maybe some of the mythology is a bit off… but hey, it’s a game. It doesn’t have to be real. If I wanted it to be that real I’d read an atlas and check out the Mythology section of the library. What it is, is FUN–and that’s what counts.

Translation Description:

Toma did an excellent job with this one. The font is really nifty-looking, and the script is well-written. So, um, play it, and hurray!

Fair quality, but playable.

A RPG from ancient Greek times? Sure! Did I like Dragon Warrior? Yes. And I really like Greek mythology.

This does translate the game for sure and I found absolutely nothing wrong, no bugs present. It works properly. There is some dialog I would have changed as some of it was a little silly (who calls someone a pussy in ancient times?) and not all dialog is very clear as sometimes I had to use an FAQ to advance further as this is not entirely linear. The setting is fresh though and day goes into night too. The game was too easy at first, but then became challenging as I even found out that some enemies can break your equipment! The battles are a little slow paced and there is no boss music.

Still, I couldn’t put it down until I was victorious. Needs a little polish, but overall pretty good game.
