Description:

The Final Fantasy VI Relocalization Project is an attempt to “relocalize” the Super Nintendo game Final Fantasy VI in a way that the original localization team might have done, if they had more time, ROM space, and freedom from censorship to do better.

This hack features a completely new script based heavily on the GBA translation, completely uncensored graphics, a fancy new font, dozens of bugfixes, full descriptions for all items and spells, and a variety of other small fixes and tweaks to make this the best possible version of Final Fantasy VI without altering the actual gameplay in an appreciable way.

Archive contains patches for both headered and unheadered ROMs.

It amazes me to see so many in the RHDN community that approve of retranslations like this, and call them professional quality. I’ve looked at many key scenes and come to one conclusion: this script is boring. It goes beyond just throwing out Woolseyisms. The dialog reads like the unofficial subtitles you’d find for an anime. It’s almost as bad as RPGONE, and in some cases worse.

The only reason you would ever want to use this hack is if you are some snob who despises anybody who dares localize anything from Japan other than a basic, literal translation. I mean the type of person who scoffs at anybody who would willingly play Metal Gear Solid with the English voices. It still doesn’t fix some of the core issues with the official translations, namely the difference between Magitek and Magic, which is still an issue here. You can see in one of the screenshots that Terra is a “Magic Knight”, but “Magitek Knight” is still a thing in the dialog.

There’s also the font. Why? What is so wrong with the original Chicago font that people like you and Sky Render feel the need to change it to an ugly dot matrix font? The most offensive part of it is the menu, it looks horrible. The letters actually overlap the text window. I also should point out some of the graphical glitches present in some parts of the game from uncensoring the final battle graphics. While I commend Dr. Meat for managing to do that, I don’t think it’s worth some of these glitchy backgrounds.

We live in the year 2019, and there are still fan translators that don’t want to take notes from anyone who’s actually made it in the localization and ADR industry? Count me out.
