Metroid + Saving Unofficial Update

Hack of Metroid

Note: This patch has certain issues at the moment. Not only are door transitions so fast that they cause improper palette loading, but the ROM also may not work on certain emulators like Nestopia or Retroarch due to the RNG for unknown reasons. This will be fixed in the next version which will be soon, but in the meantime, here’s a patch that removes the RNG in case you still want to use the other emulators:

An update to the famous Metroid + Saving hack initially designed by snarfblam. Based off the well-hidden 0.4 version (which included wall jumping and a corner map), this version tends to improve some of the graphical issues of that version and add in new content on top of that.

New content includes:

  • Reductions in missile door cost (5 missiles to 1 with red doors and 10 to 5 with yellow/purple doors)
  • Manual saving via Up+A
  • Restored Japanese RNG
  • Sped-up door transitions
  • Morphball glitch initially not seen in original game fixed
  • Health refilled 100% upon respawning

You’re allowed to use this hack as the base of your own hack or on other, already existing hacks (please keep in mind that the ROM of the hack must be expanded). If you would like to leave feedback on the project, please do so. This project was done with the idea of making Metroid a much more enjoyable experience, so if there’s any issues with the current version you’d like to see fixed, feel free to leave feedback or critiques in the review section. Special thanks to snarfblam for making the original + Saving hack.

This patch does everything it sets out to do, and I especially like that it moved the mini-map to the right hand corner instead of keeping it on the left side of the screen, like in the 0.4 version. It’s hard to go back after experiencing the fast door transitions. The changes will even work with Metroid mOTHER, if you create a diff patch between Metroid + Saving 0.3 and this version, and then apply that diff patch to Metroid mOTHER.

However, there is one major graphical bug that, while not preventing me from recommending this, are very distracting. At certain points where Samus transitions to a room with new palettes, the palettes in the new room will be bugged out. Two examples of this:

  • The fastest way to see what I mean is to enter the right half of Brinstar at the start of the game, and you will see two platforms slightly discoloured.
  • After you get the first missile pack, return to the left half of Brinstar to obtain the Long Beam. When entering the room with the chozo statue, you will see the stage underneath the door is the wrong palette. When you emerge back into the blue shaft of the left half of Brinstar, the palette underneath the door’s position will be brown instead of blue.

This happens all over the map, including (from what I tested) in the elevator room to Norfair, and in the tunnel connecting the left and right half of Brinstar (not always but often enough). It doesn’t prevent the game from working, but it’s distracting enough to hinder the experience. From my testing, this doesn’t happen in the 0.3 or 0.4 versions. As of now, I tentatively recommend this patch, but if this bug could be fixed, this would easily be the best way to play this game.
