Hack of Monster Party

Description:

What originally began as a simple “restoration” grew into a full-blown improvement of the original game!

Changes include:

  • New Intro/Ending text, or at least a greatly cleaned-up version that reads like it was written by an actual English-speaking human being.
  • New Boss text, that’s more accurate to the original prototype (sorry, no Mark Soup).
  • Most Enemy/Boss sprites changed to the prototype versions, with some recolors (only the Pumpkin Boss remains unchanged, and the jiangshi enemies in Round 7 are still ghosts, as their behavior was altered for the English release).
  • Some of the “uglier” Rounds have been given a makeover, mainly palette changes.
  • Mark’s(and Bert’s) sprites are now red in-game, to match his cutscene appearance.
  • The infamous Round 7 key glitch is fixed! All three bosses must be defeated to advance.

ROM / ISO Information:

  • Name: Monster Party (USA) [no-intro(20170908)]
  • CRC32: 6F0AC6EC
  • MD5: 93A6A8AD271791502723FDD5C47EC629
  • SHA-1: 2BC8244CAB439AC20BAA4724E8A92748D4E430E1

Interesting Concept

Reviewed By: Mother Kojiro on 03 Apr 2019

Ever since I’d heard that the Japanese version of Monster Party was different, but was never released, I was fascinated by what might have been. When this hack came out, I knew that I had to play it. I don’t really know too much about how the original was supposed to be, but I’d thought that more would be changed than this, and I also remember seeing a Planet of the Apes boss room that wasn’t here. That said, I still give this a recommend; what is changed is interesting to see, the new dialogue is good, and the whole experience plays like some kind of hypothetical Second Quest, as was common back in the day. I will certainly be keeping both versions of this game in my library.
