SMB3 - Extended Edition

Hack of Super Mario Bros. 3

Description:

A patch thought to be long lost to the void of the internet, it’s the return of ShaneM’s “Super Mario Bros. 3 Extended Edition”!

This is a purification work. This is a hack of SMB3 that fixes glitches and restores beta features. The original SMB3 had 90 levels, while this one has 107. Most of the lost levels have been restored, while adding 3 e-levels from the GBA version: Super Mario Advance 4. The lost Hammer Bros. of World 7 has also been restored. Previously unused tiles and graphics have been utilized. The biggest feature: the lost level “Parabeetle Plains”! The new levels have been given an unused Ghost House sprite on the overworld maps. Features, as well as the original damage system have been restored from the original Japanese version, too.

There are two lost enemies, too: gold Cheep-cheeps and green Parabeetles.

Patches have been made for both the PRG0 & PRG1 ROMs.

Out Of Place

Reviewed By: Sephirous on 09 Sep 2018

There are a few things that seemed to go wrong while I was playing this game. The first noticeable problem that occurs is the graphics on the map screen tend to hang over outside of the Map boundaries causing graphic glitches. The extra stages seem completely out of place, There are a couple new ones in Desert Land that look like they should be in Sky Land instead. The first extra stage in Grass Land has enemies in it that I am pretty sure shouldn’t be introduced until later on. Bob Bombs are usually a more difficult enemy to fight against and aren’t usually introduced in the first 4 Levels. The unused Castle Sprite is nice but really should be used for unused or custom castle stages not out doors kinda stuff. Just feels wrong. The extra world doesn’t show up on the (Whistle) world select screen as I had expected. This kind of downs the excitement as for the player to get to the new world he/she must first get through all the glitches and out of place feelings just to see what the new world has to offer. I realize it’s probably meant for a strong build up, but only ends up being a boring journey through the old stuff just to see something new. The save feature is nice, However the all stars slot option could have been better. I was also hoping for the unused title music to be heard during the opening. This hack is a good shot at what it was intended for, but just not my cup of tea. Projects can always evolve. So maybe a revision in the future could be something nice to see at some point.
