Chrono Trigger: Bugfix and Uncensoring Patch

Hack of Chrono Trigger

Description:

This patch is geared towards fixing bugs and patching up script inconsistencies or censorship. The aim is to preserve the original translation while generally improving the game as a whole.

  • Completely decapitalized names in dialogue.
  • No more indentation of normal dialogue in textboxes.
  • Fixes to gameplay bugs, such as Targeting AI.
  • Restoration of alcohol, prayer, entities, you name it!
  • Minor restoration of points Chrono Cross brings up that were present in the original, just not in the localization.

If you have been playing previous editions before the version number says “rebuilt” or are using a save from elsewhere such as an unpatched game, listen up: saves made after Mystic Mountain is first visited that did not use the CronoNick patch are not compatible, as the game will glitch out when viewing Falcon Hit’s description or some of Ayla’s lines. Saves between current patch versions are 100% compatible.

This was originally an addendum to Chrono Trigger’s already existing dialogue related bugfix patch. There are still many fixes from here contained within.

Gold standard for the purist

There a lot of things that I love about Chronosplit’s Bugfix / Uncensoring project for Chrono Trigger. He has done a wonderful job documenting all the updates in his readme file but I’d love to briefly summarize what I enjoyed with this package.

First, the script. This is not for the literalist who would prefer absolute accuracy over fluidity and charm. This hack is for the person who thought the original SNES translation did a fine job aside from the occasional confusing or poorly written lines. While I’d estimate that around 90 percent of the original script is intact, I find a lot of value in the fixes present as the original had some jarring moments. Most of the uncensoring we see here occurs refers exclusively to script elements. This was generally adult content like alcohol or cross dressing that was 100 percent native to the Japanese game and presented tastefully and comically.

Beyond the script, this hack does a fine job fixing several ability names which were rather poorly localized in the original. When it comes to equipment names and the more accurate naming of elements, Chronosplit was kind enough to provide several variations of the patch in order to respect the personal preferences of the user. I appreciate this as I tend to always experience a nagging issue or two when a project takes a one size fits all approach. I found myself switching between a couple options during the play through until I settled into what I liked best.

Lastly, I’ll speak briefly about bug fixes. Chrono Trigger was never like Final Fantasy I or VI in the sense that it was bogged down with an inordinate number of bugs–many of which deeply affecting gameplay. Nevertheless, I still feel satisfaction at knowing a few bugs were fixed. True to its name, this hack delivers the goods.

My only additional feedback would be the possible inclusion of an optional improvement or two regarding what I consider to be design oversights in the original game. I generally value this kind of minor tweaking over altogether new content. It would seem that there are great things to come with the future update that will convert all the NPC dialogue in 600 AD to medieval English. Everyone in 65,000,000 BC already speaks caveman, right?

As a perfectionist and a lover the original releases of classic games, I can’t recommend this project any more highly. For those of a like mind, there is no reason that this shouldn’t be considered the ideal version of the game.
