Zero has always been a fun character in the X series, and for good reason. He has a tough persona, sleek red armor, long hair, and eventually his signature saber, which was an awesome departure from the traditional run-and-gun of the Megaman series as a whole. Granted, his potential in X1 is a far cry from what he eventually becomes, but the idea of playing as him was a fun idea. Unfortunately, Falchion22’s execution here isn’t as clean as one could hope for.
While the standing shot of Zero in the opening prologue looks decent (sans hair), there are a number of graphical issues that take away from the experience. Zero’s sprites have some decent detailing, and the author made sure to include his white charged shot, but his head is disproportionately large, his hair is missing entirely, and the tail burst that appears when he dashes is bland and static, which isn’t how it appears in his scenes in the original game.
Aside from Zero, there are a number of other graphical problems as well. X’s sprites and animations are also static and broken, and this is apparent when he frees Zero from Vile’s grasp in the opening stage. I also noticed the sloppy misuse of “should of”, the lack of punctuation, and the completely static portraits when characters are speaking.
While replacing Dr. Light with Wily’s sprites was a neat idea, Wily’s dialogue offers little to the player, and is somewhat incoherent, as he segues from “He is my rival Destroy him!!” to “Step into this capsule to receive an acceleration boost.” Like the other characters that have portraits, his is also static and has no speaking animation.
Aside from the graphical and grammatical issues, this hack does little to make the experience unique to Zero. From beginning to end, everything plays exactly the same as the original game, with no change whatsoever. Weapons and upgrades work the same as they did for X, and boss AI, level designs, and whatnot are all completely unchanged. Nothing about this hack makes me feel like I’m playing with a different character, and even some variation in the stock Z-Buster would have been appreciated (faster charge times, fewer bullets on screen, etc).
Between the graphical issues, the sloppy dialogue, and the lack of any real innovation, this is an unpolished 2/10 hack that adds nothing new or exciting to the original game, and does little to make you feel like you’re playing with Zero and not X.
