Funny Princess

Hack of Super Mario Bros.

Description:

An interesting hack where you star Princess Peach on your search for Mario. This hack combines graphics from Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Mario Bros. 3, Yoshi’s Island, and Kirby’s Dream Land. Jumping and the play control have been hacked as well and feel more consistent with Super Mario Bros. 2.

There's Something Funny About This Princess

Reviewed By: Mother Kojiro on 21 Dec 2017

This hack may not be something that you want to play as a game, specifically, but it’s pretty interesting as a weird experiment. It starts out promising enough, using a black underwater area with hearts as bubbles to show the princess pining for her love Mario, who’s been kidnapped for a change. You walk out into a beautiful flowery field with a gorgeous sky overhead that resembles Yoshi’s Island, but looks a lot better in 8 bits. You get to the end, and grab an axe (already!?) and end the world. 2-1 is even more beautiful with a pink flowery field; it’s easily my favorite part. By now, you’ve powered up and found… ice balls? I think that’s what they’re supposed to be, since the princess’s dress turns blue, and they freeze the shy guys into blocks of ice, a la Kirby’s Adventure, but it’s red ice. Fair enough, since the shy guys are red; it probably just uses the same palette. How about the goombas? Brown ice, right? Nope; they get squished. They stay squished for a little while, and then pop back up again. Some enemies glitch a little when they’re hit, some hop up a few pixels and stay at that height for reasons, and others are just outright immune. Hit detection is a little weird sometimes, because you can get hit in your midsection by a flying enemy, and sometimes, they get stomped; maybe she’s punching them? There’s also this section at the end of the game where… actually, I’m not really sure what happened, but I got through it tens of thousands of points and several lives richer. The game is, as another review suggests, a colorful, broken mess, but I think it’s one worth experiencing; it’s not like the glitches actually impede your progress.
