A Wonderful Experiment

Reviewed By: Mother Kojiro on 15 Dec 2017

It almost seems like the purpose of this hack was to answer a lot of “what ifs”, and it does that very well, right from the beginning. You’ll see boring old plains with red hills and pipes, underwater mushrooms and hellish coral at night, and more all in the very first world. Each world has its own theme, which is a neat idea for the original Super Mario Bros.; many future titles in the franchise have this, but it’s not common to see it here. Almost every world is packed with every kind of experiment you could imagine, and it’s interesting to see how things play out; it’s almost like laying open the very source code of the original game. You’ll see castle walls at night and underground, underwater castles, underground castles, castles with daylight for some reason, a fake Bowser that’s actually a piranha plant, and tons of other oddities. One of the neatest structural experiments is a bridge that connects 2 castles in the night sky. The level design is mostly fair, save for a hellish underwater castle or two; you might not have to rely on states very heavily. Make no mistake: this hack is raw, but if you’re looking for something experimental, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better example than this.
