So Much Potential

Reviewed By: Mother Kojiro on 01 Dec 2017

This hack has a lot of problems, the biggest of which is that it’s just too chaotic. There are tons of enemies almost everywhere; nearly the entire game is a total flicker fest. It’s not even just that they’re in cheap places, either; the levels become quite tedious to complete, because not only are you constantly stopping to fight enemies, each fight will take you quite a while. A few of the first 8 boss chambers have pits, which wouldn’t be so bad, but you have to be careful of where you are when you beat the boss, lest you fall to your death while running to the center of the room. Some of the levels - Top Man’s springs immediately to mind - have backgrounds that could cause a bad headache.

Oh, but when this hack is on point, it is a thing of absolute beauty. With the number of handmade tiles, you can tell that a lot of love went into this. The bosses don’t have new identities, but every single one is a different palette, and so are your weapons. There are some really cool background elements in Spark Man’s stage, and the second Gemini Man stage has an absolutely breathtaking underwater section that actually uses Rush Marine! Magnet Man’s stage inspired me to write a stylized article about it, and his boss chamber is a thing of which dreams are made; I’d drop everything and run to play a hack with all of the boss chambers laid out like such a glorious jungle gym! I think this hacker would make an excellent collaborator, because there are some marvelous ideas here, but lacking is the experience necessary to reign them in and make them work. Please keep trying; I could be your biggest fan!
