A Neat Twist

Reviewed By: Mother Kojiro on 15 Nov 2017

This is a shorter hack, but has a neat concept: hidden special coins in each level. If you find the coins, you’ll be able to access a secret world that gives you the true final boss and real ending. Said secret world is really cool, too, and has a great final stage. Tanooki and Hammer Bro Mario don’t make an appearance as far as I can tell, and you only get one Frog Suit, but you can use both that and Raccoon Mario with Fiery Mario, so you can rain fire from the sky, or have the ultimate underwater assault suit.

The hack is not without its problems, though. For one, you can’t replay stages, so if you missed the coin your first time through, you’re sunk. Some of the coins are in really bizarre places, too; you’ll occasionally have to fly into random patches of sky to look for hidden areas where they might be. At the very least, though, they are always near something. Having fireballs and a raccoon tail is a bit of a mixed blessing, too; as you throw fire, you’re whipping your tail, which will occasionally cause you to fire in the wrong direction. It’s a little rough around the edges, but worth experiencing at least once.
