Surreal as Ever

There are a lot of excellent hacks of Super Mario Bros. 3 out there, but not many capture just how aesthetically weird the environments in the original original were. This hack brings some fresh visual ideas to the table, and that alone was enough to keep me going. World 2’s overworld map looks like a burning, ashen wasteland, and the stages are dark and gray, much like outdoor versions of the fortress from the original game’s World 2. World 3 is made up of lavender beaches, and its fortresses are black and deep purple with a milky-colored water. World 5’s lower half is a desolate brown area, the tower to the upper half is dark and foreboding, and there’s a stage in the upper half with white skies and blue clouds. World 6 has the same weird wintry look, perfect for a cloudy Winter day. World 7 has a nice pink and deep red color combination, and its pipe mazes have golden pipes in the foreground with purple ones in the distance. In terms of gameplay, it’s tough; it’s pretty reasonable early on, but for the last half or so, you’ll probably want to use states. One last tip: the hack is in Spanish, so if you don’t speak it, you’ll need to know that there’s a stage in World 7 that doesn’t have an exit; you’ll have to look for a red music note block to bounce into the next area.
