Kouryuu Densetsu Villgust: Kieta Shoujo is a role playing game for the Super Nintendo.
This game is an adaptation of a popular anime series of the same name. Unfortunately, neither the anime nor the NES or SNES games have seen a release in the US. So, I must thank Taskforce & Co. for this excellent translation.
The game itself is standard RPG fare: five heroes are set off to save the world, interspersed with anime cut scenes and random monster encounters. Of course, if you’re anything like me (chances are you’re not), you’ll love this game. It’s fun ^_^. If you’re a fan of the “old-school” RPG, you’ll love this game, download the patch now!
The readme doesn’t mention it, but this patch needs a ROM with a header to work.

I recently played through Villgust, and was impressed by the quality of the localization, all the more so for a fan-translation from 1998 (!). Dynamic Designs really made this game feel like an official release from the early SNES library. Outside of a few typos (”foolheardy”, “tought”), and two annoying occasions when a character says something is “east of here” when it’s really west (unless the game is pulling some Simon’s Quest-style misinformation?), it’s a very clean script that’s free of nonsense and has been skillfully inserted.
Sadly, the game itself is less impressive. It did pick up a bit toward the end, but the opening half is quite a slog. In some ways it’s one of the most cookie-cutter JRPGs I’ve ever played, with one-dimensional combat, little in the way of story, and a completely linear structure. Only a couple curveballs with multiple parties (and a whale!), and an unusual way of handling level scaling, kept it from being utterly devoid of distinction.
At least it moves along at a decent clip, though, and the mindlessness of it made for a decent companion while I was sick with a cold and watching TV.
I should also note that there are a few glitches. Some of these are minor, and probably inherent in the original game: treasure chests sometimes take 5-6 tries to open for no apparent reason; all the bartenders say “Yes” and nothing else; and for some reason dying and continuing sometimes makes the game run faster, with text boxes that open and close very quickly (which is nice when you’re grinding).
There’s also one major glitch: when you fight and defeat the game’s next-to-last boss (the henchman Gazus), there’s a very good chance that the game will crash to a black screen shortly afterward. The easy workaround is to use an Exit item to leave the area immediately, save, and then restart from your save file. I don’t know whether this issue was added by the translation patch, or was already in the original game, but it’s been reproduced by multiple users on different emulators (I was using BSNES), and I suspect it’ll happen on real hardware too.
Anyway, none of these issues detract from Dynamic Designs’ strong localization work on this title, and I’m grateful to them for the chance to play this flawed (but vaguely hypnotic) early SNES RPG.
