Castlevania Retold

Hack of Castlevania

Description:

Castlevania Retold is–as the name suggest–a retelling of the original NES Castlevania. I wanted to keep the original story intact (Many of the CV games are retellings of the first one, this is no different) but offer new levels and graphics, this is just that. All the levels have the same themes to them they originally had, but with new layouts and enemy placement, I also wanted to keep the classic feel to it, which is why I used mostly graphics from CV2 and 3. There are very few custom graphics in the hack, I’m not good with graphics at all, but I did make a new title screen using the new CV logo (Which Moonchile later enhanced) and enhanced some of the orignal sprits. Any Castlevania fan will probably like this, but until recently I didn’t notice it’s one downside: It’s hard. As I made this hack I pretty much learned how everything in CV’s game engine works, the exact timing of enemies and such. So, while I can play through most of it with no problems even my friends who are good at Castlevania die several times on the first level. (Sorry about the short review, I suck at these kind of things…)

Fly enemies

Reviewed By: onepiecefan2007 on 31 Jan 2018

This hack is pretty good. It’s simpler than the original one and this might bother some, but it did not bother me personally. Level design is done well except for one thing: I have no idea of the reason but many enemies (including bosses) are blue, which personally annoyed me. Let’s go to the painful notes:

1) There are too many onscreen enemies that sometimes cause a slowdown in the game

2) The simplicity of the bosses is embarrassing, just spamming the whip to get rid of the first 4 bosses

3) Stage 6 is too difficult! You have to get lucky enough to get alive at the end of the first screen, with only 3 shots and a lot of flying shit that you chase. I said 3 because you’ll be hit immediately at the beginning!

This hack would have been good if it had not been for Stage 6! My vote is no, but the firs 5 stages are fun enough
