Hack of Dragon Warrior II

Description:

The purpose of this hack is to mitigate many of the flaws of Dragon Warrior II in order to create an overall play experience more similar to that of its NES sequels.

Major changes include: gold and experience point winnings in battle are increased, mini-bosses are now more challenging, shops and treasure chests are adjusted, late-game equipment is buffed, new names are used for the Prince of Cannock and Princess of Moonbrooke, and more. However, the script and events are unchanged.

Please see the readme for details. And thank you to everyone who tries this hack!

Exactly the fix this game needed!

Reviewed By: tog on 26 Jun 2017

For years now, I’ve been wanting to play the Dragon Warrior series, but was always turned off by people talking about this game’s difficulty. Well, that is not the case any more.

Playing this game for the first time using this hack, it seemed like levels flowed naturally without much excessive grinding. There was a bit of level-building in the beginning, but not so much to turn the game off.

The difficulty seemed well-balanced as well. I didn’t have much trouble with the game at all in that regards.

The only thing I could mention is that there needs to be more balancing towards the end of the game. Enemies become so difficult and no longer give off as much experience as is truly needed to complete the game. I would suggest dramatically increasing the experience gained in the final areas to make it easier to level up to the extent that is needed to survive that part.

Overall, though, this hack is exactly what we needed. If only more like this for various other NES RPGs, like the other DWs and FFs, existed, the library would be much more playable.

Kudos to the author for a job well done! Highly Recommended!
