Hack of Super Metroid

This is a complete Super Metroid hack, that alone makes it worth playing. It features new maps, layouts, item placements, and enemy placements. The areas in the beginning are similar to the originals, the farther you advance the more it changes. The difficulty is about the same as the original, and the puzzles are decent. There is a minor glitch where parts of the map won’t be displayed when reloading your save.

A Fantastic New Game That Feels Like the Original

Reviewed By: thunder135 on 10 Nov 2017

This game is an absolute delight to play. It’s a brand new game, with a new map and new item placements, but in the spirit of the original. It almost recreated the feeling I had playing the original SM for the first time. I’d say it is slightly more challenging.

This is an early one, so don’t expect any fancy ASM programming, hand-drawn sprites etc. I think the effort is better spend on level design anyway.

Advanced techniques are NOT required to complete the game. Here’s a short (but incomplete) list of techniques you will not need.

    • Wall jump
    • Jump-morph
    • Infinite bomb jump
    • Mockball

However, to get 100% items you may need some of these, but probably not mockball since that’s a really a glitch. So if you find yourself wall jumping to advance, that probably means you missed an item. Unlike the original, shinespark is required. Fortunately none are very difficult and you are given plenty of room to dash. If you think you need to do mockball, try a horizontal shinespark instead.

Item progression is well done. The game gives you subtle hints as to where to go next and what items you need. I got stuck a couple of times and struggled to find the next item, but once I found the next path, it seemed obvious in retrospect. I remember this happening a couple times in the original too.

One downside – the map screen gets messed up once you get to the wrecked ship. Nothing game-breaking, but you won’t be able to tell what rooms you’ve been to anymore. That discouraged me from trying to get 100%.

In summary, a straightforward hack with fantastic level design. Give it a try!
