Super Metroid MSU-1

Hack of Super Metroid

Description:

This patch adds support for CD quality audio to Super Metroid using MSU-1 chip invented by byuu. So far, it is only supported and tested on BSNES, higan and the SD2SNES flashcart.

If the MSU-1 is not detected, the patch plays the original music, thus the patch works on all emulators (but it is less fun to listen to).

The link to the audio pack is included in the README file. It uses Blake Robinson’s reorchetration http://syntheticorchestra.com/

Music isn't great.

Reviewed By: 44100hz on 20 Jun 2015

It works properly in every situation I played. I noticed that many tracks become cut off due to lack of fading in/out, but it’s rarely much of an issue.

The problem I have is that the music is over-dramatic, and hurts the game’s feel. It’s far too suspenseful. The rhythm or “heartbeat” that kept the game moving is absent. It puts the player on edge, and makes the game feel much colder and less exciting. Also, it’s much more dynamic than the original music, which can make it at times silent, and other times distracting.

To be fair, it’s very hard to top the original soundtrack, but the replacement soundtrack doesn’t stand up on its own.
