Pokémon Red, Green, and Blue Versions - 100% English (Standard Edition)

Hack of Pokémon: Blue Version

Description:

You’ve finally been granted your trainer’s license. Now, it’s time to head out to become the world’s greatest Pokémon trainer. It’s going to take all you’ve got to collect 151 Pokémon in this enormous world. Catch and train monsters like the shockingly-cute Pikachu. Face off against Venusaur’s poisonous flower power. Stand strong when facing Pidgeot’s stormy Gust. Trade with friends (using BGB link support) and watch your Pokémon evolve. Important–no single Pokémon can win it all. Can you develop the ultimate Pokémon strategy to defeat the eight GYM Leaders and become the greatest Pokémon Master of all time?

  • Catch up to 124 different Pokémon playing Red/Green version alone. Using the BGB emulator (download not included), trade with a friend (or yourself) with the opposite version included to attain all 151.
  • You’ll need to use both versions (Red and Green; both included) to collect all the Pokémon.
  • Test your training skills by battling against a friend using BGB (or another Link Cable-compatible emulator).
  • Requires basic English reading skills in order to fully enjoy the entertaining story.
  • Compatible with Pokémon Stadium 1 and 2, Super Game Boy, Gameshark, and Game Genie.
  • Fully compatible with flashcarts for gameplay on actual hardware (enjoy the elegant nostalgia).

Apply either the Red or Green patch to a clean copy of Pokémon Blue. Green is a hack of Blue and Red is a hack of that Green (which is, as stated, a hack of English Blue). A 100% English translation of Japanese Blue is also included. It is another “re-hack” of Green, which is already a hack of English Blue.

Red and Green the way they were supposed to be played

Reviewed By: Snugglefox on 11 Mar 2015

Update: scroll don’t to bottom of review for updates and corrections.

I came across this hack last night as I was going to ask someone to restore the English gen 1 games to match the Japanese counterparts. I played through the Green hack this morning and it is an amazing recreation of the original Japanese Green with some bugs fixed (including some bugs present in Blue). When loaded into Pokémon Stadium 2 PS2 reads it as Pokémon Green and shows the green cartridge icon.

One thing that was both a plus and a negative was the text changes. The Raichu trade text has been corrected (the evolving Raichu has always bugged me) and the coffee guy is drunk like in the Japanese games which I feel mixed about as I appreciate the accuracy to the Japanese version but I also feel the coffee text is what belongs there.

I did find 2 issues though. In the Green hack Viridian city is the wrong shade of green and the Red hack has the Green game corner icons (Japanese Red has the same icons present in the English red and blue). Hopefully the hacker will fix these issues in a later version as visual accuracy is important to this hack. I haven’t tested thoroughly enough to see if any other places had the wrong sgb colors.

My lasting impression is I’m so thoroughly impressed I plan on flashing these to some carts and playing them instead of official Red and Blue carts. Hopefully the issues I mentioned will be fixed and we eventually get Blue, Yellow (Japanese version didn’t have GBC mode) and Crystal (GS have already been done) restorations for a true Japanese version experience

Update: I checked the readme and it said the Viridian City palette was for Green was “optimized” so it was intentional and not a bug.

Update: I’ve contacted the creator of the hack and he says he will look into the slot machine issue with Red. He also says he has published a Japanese Blue English hack but it is absent from ROMhacking.net
