Difficult, but worth a try.

Megaman In Java Island is a fairly comprehensive level and graphics hack of Mega Man 2. The game’s text is an odd mix of Indonesian and English, but this did not detract from the overall experience.

After trying 4-5 of the levels, I found that the hack is just too difficult for me, even on the easier difficulty – but I’m sure many hardcore fans will welcome the increased difficult from the original game. It is obvious that a lot of work was put into this hack.

I wasn’t able to reach any of the bosses so I can’t comment on them.

Pros:

  • Completely revamped levels
  • Varied level design
  • Revamped tile graphics
  • Music switch-arounds welcomed (such as getting rid of the annoying game over music)

Cons:

  • Backgrounds/foregrounds sometimes too prominent, making it difficult to tell what is exactly you can and can’t collide with. (ie. Airman’s stage)
  • Graphics sometimes VERY flashy, becoming distracting.
  • Possible to get stuck on the far right of Quick Man’s stage, as you can’t jump out of the area you can fall in to the right of the two pipes. (Had to reset my emulator.)
  • Partly a continuation of the previous comment, it’s not always apparent when you can jump down a screen or when it’s a death pit, forcing trial and error – though I suppose the original game had some of these too.

Overall, I’d say the hack is definitely worth a try if you’re a fan of the NES Mega Man games like I am.
