Zelda3 Time & Day/Night cycling system

Hack of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

Description:

This improvement adds a virtual in-game clock displayed on the status bar, along with a day/night cycling system using this clock that tints the palettes (excluding the status bar) in the overworld areas according to the hours. Tint colors and timer speed are easily customisable, everything is explained in the readme and it is easily usable for custom hacks. ASM source is included in the archive.

It can be applied to a normal Link to the Past ROM so that you would play through the whole game with this effect (though it doesn’t change any event of the story), it hasn’t been tested everywhere but it should work fine.

Interesting new feature

Reviewed By: puzzledude on 24 Feb 2014

It is to be noted that this is not a standard hack, but rather an ASM feature. It brings the feeling of the day and night cycle into Alttp by manipulating the overworld palette and it is specially recommended to be used with other hacks.

It is also highly adoptable: you can change how fast the time should advance as well as how dark should the palettes be, which is praising.

The only problem I have with this hack is, that it doesn’t assume that the original overlays are also making the game dark (rain, fog, dark forest mist). In such occasions the day and night effect should be turned off and the game should be fully bright; since the full-bright in a combination with rain makes it dark enough.

The night palette in a combination with rain, fog or dark forest mist is way to dark (clearly seen in Parallel Worlds, where you start the game in “high darkness” and you don’t see the landscape at all). The day and night effect should be turned off, when such a dark overlay occurs.
