Low Impact - High Falls

Reviewed By: MetroidMst on 21 Nov 2013

This review is based off of the easy version of the hack. I haven’t played the normal version, but the easy one will give you enough of a hassle.

Right off the bat, you will find out what this hack is all about. You start on a ledge, and if you run off and hit the floor. . . You die. From fall damage. That isn’t the end of it however, as you can’t go much higher than your jump height without coming down and damaging yourself. Yes, this hack is based on not dying from the dreaded jelly-knee. To combat your untimely death at the hand of small heights, you are given the ability to start a spin-jump in midair. Learn to get good with it, because you will need it.

Low Impact is a challenge hack, but it has a small bit of exploration to it. Don’t get too excited about that though, as it is minimal and everywhere is filled with little challenges. There are some really nice elements built around making the player do death-defying stunts. It is definitely a unique take on Metroid too, as before missing a walljump and falling meant simply starting over at the base of the wall, now it means death and starting from the last save. Thankfully, Daltone provided a single save station. That was the best decision in the hack.

PROS

  • Has a save station
  • Challenge is unique in a Metroid hack

CONS

  • Death can happen from one small mistake
  • Outright cruel placement of some crumble blocks
  • Save is out of the way of the player after they collect some important items
  • Some background tiles look like actual platforms, so the player can jump to them thinking they are safe and fall to their death

Low Impact is not just another challenge hack. I would say it is the best of them all in that category because the challenge isn’t something you will find anywhere else. The elements are also well built around the fall damage. No matter how well built it is though, fall damage just doesn’t fit well in Metroid, especially the pathetic heights Samus will die at in this. It might be interesting to check out, and it isn’t bad looking at all, however, you are getting nothing more than a small hack built around a less than stellar idea. It is interesting, but actually enjoying the experience is another matter. Definitely do not pick this up for a casual play.
