Great New Adventure, if the Colour Doesn't Bother You

Reviewed By: Drag0nwind on 09 Jan 2015

Okay, I’ll make a new review, since I just completed my second playthrough of Otherworld and had a lot of fun.

To begin, the first thing you’ll notice in the screenshots is the unique colour palette. While slightly overpowering at first, you get used to it. It IS Otherworld, afterall. Unfortunately, it’s difficult to make out some text at certain parts of the game. Perhaps sticking with a black and white window would have made things easier to read.

I hate to be that guy, but, there are also several spelling mistakes throughout the game. I can’t help but cringe when I see them. There are some other little things, like switching the Cube quest item into Code, but, when you click on it, it still says “colors gather and swirl in the Cube”. Not that it matters that much, of course.

Also, the background in the menus glitches when you are in certain towns or on the grass tileset.

Nitpicking out of the way, I still had quite a bit of fun playing FF Otherworld, being a big FF fan. Some sweet aspects of the hack include:

    • Tons of cool new enemies everywhere.
    • Hoards of treasure to loot and choose from
    • New layouts pretty well everywhere, Gurgu volcano was sweet

I also liked how there were a couple new areas on the overworld. Kind of makes me want to make my own Final Fantasy ROM hack, I think I would make it pretty interesting.

Anyway, I think the hack could be polished up a bit, but it didn’t keep me away. I think Murex did a great job creating something unique.

So, if you’re interested in something a little different and don’t mind the colour palette, give Otherworld a try!

Thanks for the fun quest!
