Promising, but needs a lot of work yet

Reviewed By: Sparkbomber on 21 Jul 2013

Okay, not everyone may know this, but back in the day the main Pokemon anime series had a filler season that was set at the Orange Islands, a tropical paradise of archipelago and exotic people. (Most of them trainers.)

Having seen these episodes way back, it always saddened me that they were anime-only, because they would make for an interesting trip compared to the usual continental tour of Kanto, Johto, Sinnoh, etc.

So when I ran across the current 2b version of Pokemon Orange/Naranja I was thrilled; finally a game featuring one of the best filler seasons in anime I’ve encountered.

Yet, perhaps I set my hopes too high because the current build is plagued by several lesser and greater problems that detract from the playability and enjoyment of this hack. Let’s tackle them, shall we?

The first thing you’ll notice is that the opening cutscenes take ages to start, play and end. This however has naught to do with a wall of text or impressive sprite-acting. Rather they load slow and proceed at a snail’s pace that I’d not seen since my brother’s first PSX was running on it’s last legs.

This slowdown is present in most cutscenes/animations/conversations and is a major annoyance after a while.

The second issue is the quite incomplete translation from the original Spanish of the hack. Partly in (poor) English and partly in Spanish (that isn’t very polished either) this duality of language in game starts to grate quite swiftly on one’s nerves.

Third issue is a few small bugs and glitches that play a sound off-key or make mobile a letter in the text or glitch a Pokemon/trainer between it’s intended colors and a different palette at the start of battle. They’re not as numerous as one might think, but do pop up from time to time.

Fourth are a few small design flaws, such as edges not quite meeting.

Yet despite these current flaws this is a game I really would love playing further. Yet as is, I can’t really recommend it yet.
