Good for a chuckle but not much else.

Firstly I would like to point out that I love Super Mario Bros. It is a fantastic game that has provided me with years of amusement. Super Mario Bros: Quest for the Missing Hat is basically the same great game with the same great music. Only the graphics have been changed to make the situation a little sillier.

The premise of the game is that Mario’s hat has been stolen and he goes around searching for it. Many of his enemies wear hats as do some of the background objects and the pipes have been redrawn so that they look like hats. This is apparently a way to “rub it in” that he is lacking his own hat. The mushrooms have been redrawn to look like socks (not explained). When Mario becomes super or fire Mario he also loses his overalls so you can have him wandering around in his underwear. Some of the backgrounds and tiles have been changed to look different as well.

After that the game is identical to the original SMB. So while that in itself makes it a pretty awesome game, I don’t think that the changes really add anything worth noting to the game. If you’re like me you will chuckle the first time that you see it and you will chuckle again when you get to the end, which I won’t spoil but it is different from the traditional SMB ending. If anything I think that some of the graphics changes to the background and tiles just make everything look somewhat cluttered but that may be because I’m so used to the traditional SMB look.

So all-in-all I would say that if you’re curious to see this hack after I’ve described it then you should probably go ahead and look but I have a feeling that after you chuckle you’ll go back to playing the original or another hack with more significant changes.

I reviewed patch version 1.0 of this game.
