==================================================================================================== Disclaimer ========== I don’t own Phantasy Star or anything in it. I did, however, make this hack. I’m vivify93, known more commonly in some circles as 51793Moeman, JB, or rotschleim. Send all bug reports to vivify93 at the ROMhacking.net forum. You can post in my topic or send me a private message. Since there are a couple of different ROMs out there, I’ll tell you that you need to apply this patch to the UE (US and European; yes, they’re one entity) ROM. Make sure to keep a backup of your original; as far as I know, I didn’t change anything that would break the game, but you might not like some of the changes I made. Back when I was trying to get into the acclaimed Phantasy Star series, I noticed that the second and fourth games were plagued with horrible all caps everywhere for no reason. I decided to set out and remedy this. Note that I was, unfortunately, unable to proper-case EVERYTHING, so you’ll still see a bit of it. If you plan on mixing patches, I recommend you apply this patch to your ROM before any others, and then you should correct any all caps strings of text you find with the table file and a hex editor. ==================================================================================================== ==================================================================================================== Changelog ========= V0.2d - Altered the spellings of spells and the healing -mates. - Added TP costs to the ability list. v0.2c - Changed the spellings of two enemies. (OWLTALON > OwlTalon > Owltalon SKYTIARA > SkyTiara > Skytiara) v0.2b - Added an ability list. v0.2a - Reverted the ColorScarf’s name. (COLORSCARF > ColorScarf > R’bowScarf > ColorScarf) - Finally fixed all references to Algol as a “planet” when it’s a star system. v0.2 - This doesn’t relate to the patch, but I also added more to kingofcrusher’s table data. - Changed the spelling of “DIRECTER” to “DIRECTOR” in the credits. - Fixed some self-induced typos, a few consistency issues, some aesthetic things, and one or two expansions thrown in there. (BLOKHEAD > Blochead > Blokhead CATMAN > Catman > Catgirl FRDRAGON > FrDragon > FireDrgn MXDRAGON > MxDragon > MaxDragn HVYSOLID > HvySolid > TonSolid LRGMINER > LrgMiner > BigMiner LUNG > Lung > Nibelung LASERSWORD > LasrSword > LaserSword CERAM CAPE > Ceram Cape > CeramcCape POISONSHOT > Poison Sot > PoisonShot CRYSTANISH > CrystoNish > CrystArmor LACONINISH > Lacon Nish > LaconArmor CRESCEGEAR > CresceGear > Luna Gear COLORSCARF > ColorScarf > R’bowScarf GARDABOOTS > GardaBoots > GuardBoots) - Altered a few linebreaks and “press button” prompts during pivotal plot moments. - Neutralized some text that strictly used male pronouns. - Made a few lines sounds less… stilted. - Changed “end text display” prompt to a “press button” prompt in the text for examining Climatrol. - The word “good-bye” is spelled “goodbye,” and I capitalized all instances of the word “ok.” Also, “all right” is now spelled “alright.” - Changed the text where Rolf broke the fourth wall by asking the player about forming a party to him simply pondering aloud, asking himself in his head, or speaking to the team. - Fixed lots of instances where commas were used without spaces, like “Hey,Shir is coming back!”. I also removed a few semicolons. - Altered some text to better fit with the “YES/NO” prompts. - Fixed some grammatical, consistency, and tone issues. Normally I’d put a section containing the old lines with the new ones, but some of the text is spoilery. I’d rather just highlight a few of the things I did above. - Shorted some battle messages to fit in one text box. v0.1 - Restored Ustvestia’s line. - Put everything I could in proper case, and also modified a few items. I know that in particular there is no more “LACONIAMET”; rather, it’s the Lacon Helm. There are a few instances of things like this, so be on the lookout. Oh, and one last note—if you plan on keeping Rolf’s default name, just press “END” on the naming screen and it’ll appear in proper case. ==================================================================================================== ==================================================================================================== Left to Do ========== I need help with these remaining issues, but I don’t find them pressing enough to seek solutions for them myself. The patch is pretty much finished aside from this, though, so please don’t let this meager to-do list scare you off from the patch! 1. Fix the LaconKnife. It should add +40 attack, not +4. 2. Get lowercase letters on the naming screen somehow. 3. As I stated before, there are still many instances of all caps text. They must be compressed, as I can’t find them in the ROM. 4. The map on Gaila reads “PARMA” and "MOTABIA.” Since it’s a graphic and most likely compressed, I don’t have the means to change it to “PALMA” and "MOTAVIA.” 5. There’s a bug in the music when you talk to the master of the Esper Mansion when you get the Legendary Sword; it can be fixed by saving and resetting. Also in the same speech, there is a letter that appears as a space. I don’t know why either of these happen, but I don’t think they're my fault. 6. Adding on to that, a spoilery old man in Paseo gives part of said master’s speech. Until this is fixed, beware old men in Paseo after Climatrol! 7. The font needs to be changed. 8. Perhaps find some way to speed up walking. ==================================================================================================== ==================================================================================================== Credits ======= - kingofcrusher of RHDN for supplying the table data. - Kuwabara for creating their amazing Fix CheckSum utility, which can be found here: http://www.romhacking.net/utilities/342/ - Sega for making the game. …and all you Phantasy Star fans out there! ==================================================================================================== ==================================================================================================== Discredits ========== WHOEVER STARTED THE ALL CAPS TREND IN 1980s VIDEO GAMES. SERIOUSLY, THAT SHIT IS ANNOYING AND NOW THOSE OF US WHO DON’T WANT TO FEEL LIKE WE’RE BEING SCREAMED AT WHEN WE PICK UP TREASURE HAVE TO DEAL WITH IT NOW. It’s not that I’m not grateful and they did their best, but seriously. Why caps, why. ====================================================================================================
