Phantasy Star Generation: 4 - A Relocalization

Hack of Phantasy Star IV: The End of the Millennium

Phantasy Star Generation:4 is both a relocalization and retranslation of the original English script and proper nouns (weapons, monsters, names, etc.)

As SEGA canceled “Phantasy Star Generation:4″ many years ago, this project aimed to create a definitive, series-ending Phantasy Star experience that can also be better appreciated by modern players.

  • Restore every mistranslated connection to the other PS games
  • Best express Japanese creators’ intent in both story & themes
  • Make the game’s script more colloquial, fun, and emotional (from NPCs to main story)
  • Add PS lore
  • Add depth to character relationships
  • Explain character actions that had been given no in-game reasoning (see project site for details – spoilers)

Graphics/sound are unmodified from SEGA’s English release, besides adding in monsters present in Japanese that were censored from the English release.

Please visit the project website for more screenshots and “director” commentary. Let’s Play Director’s Commentary on YouTube coming soon.

There are four versions of the patch. Pick #2 if you aren’t sure which to use.

1. “Generation 4 - SEGA AGES”

  • Best matches story/game elements from the Playstation 2 English fan translations (Foi - Fuerer, Res - Rester, etc.), plus enhancements like vivify’s Proper Caser mod and lory1990’s bugfix patch.
  • Closest to the original Japanese intent

2. “Generation 4 - Recommended”

  • Identical to #1 but retains most of the original English technique names. Included by request and for personal preference. My preferred version and IMO the best mix between old and new.(Foi, Gra, etc.)
  • NEW* 3. Gen 4 “NO JOKE” patch
  • Removed most editorialization added to NPC lines
  • Softened a few Alys lines at the beginning
  • Removed a few added character moments

If you try the main version and it isn’t for you, this ver removes most of the added humor and color, leaving the naturalized English dialog, fixed PS references, more accurate translation, and added PS background and story. The author stands by the main version, but doesn’t want those with different preferences to miss out on the improved story.

4. SMS-Classic

  • Technique, magic and character names match the original English translations for the Master System and Genesis PS games.
  • Maintains ALL CAPS text to match style of SEGA’s English translations for much of the in-game elements

New in Version 4.4 - Final(?)

  • Allowed Raja & Rune to equip a few more shields (Plasma Field, Power Shield). Most players will never make use of these items in normal play, and there’s no in-game reason these two cannot equip them
  • Changed music for Anger Tower to “Pain”
  • Changed music for Sacred Sword Cave to “Mystery-Planet Field”
  • Added additional “Guard Robe” to one of the final towers
  • An optional boss fight at the end of the game was made slightly harder
  • Added overworld “Map” item, stored in 1st chest of the game, which was removed from final version of game but remained in the code
  • Added “Spiral Slicer” weapon that was deleted from final version of game but remained in the code.
  • Very minor line-break & typo fixes
