Update to Version 1.98a. Added chillyfeez's fix to the the Adamant Grotto so that it won't rip you off with Pink Tails. Fixed typos (Mysidian Elder before Mt Ordeals, Rosa's mother) (Thanks PersonWithTime)

Swapped the primary and alternative names. The original Japanese title should be used first with the translated title used as an alternate. The original name of the rom has been made the primary name. Kinda odd that the Japanese title makes more sense than the supposed translated title, but I didn't make the names I just swapped them lol.

Ys: The Oath in Felghana

PC

Game Description:

If there’s an Ys game that you should play, it’s probably this one. Out of the whole franchise, I’ve played the first game, this game, Ark of Nepa-something, and Ys Seven. I got far in Seven, and I couldn’t stomach the first game and Ark of Nepa-something. This one, though, this one managed to keep me interested through-out its whole run. Although this is the PC version and I played the PSP version, the differences seem cosmetic, although everything points to the PC version (this one) being superior to the PSP version, due to having more (or different) features.

So, gameplay-wise, it plays like a hack ‘n slash. Imagine what Zelda would be without dungeon items (although that’s not absent) and a level up system. In dungeons, you do get some sort of equipment that boosts your abilities, but they aren’t used the same way that Zelda dungeon items are. They’re usually some sort of magic attack or something that lets you walk on lava, for example. Also, you can jump in this game without any aids.

The sound effects for the game are alright, they fit for the most part. The music, though, is awesome. Just don’t play when you have a headache.

The graphics are usually 2D sprites on top of a 3D environment, like Dragon Quest VII, or the DS games. They work alright- you can tell what a lot of stuff are. The PC version seems to have less jagged edges, but also a more mundane interface than the PSP version.

The story seems very simple. You land on your friend’s home island and you meet up with a girl who knew your friend. After a while, you realize that something bad’s happening and you go around trying to fix what’s wrong, and in doing so, uncover hidden motives and lift curses and other hero-y, adventure-y stuff. Doesn’t matter, you get to fight giant monsters.

So, this game is pretty awesome. The game in general may be enjoyed by some Zelda fans. Obviously, Ys fans are going to enjoy it, but that should go without saying. Fans of the hack ‘n slash genre might like this. RPG fans might also enjoy it, but it requires a lot more twitch-reflexes than RPGs demand, so be warned. Fans of the action/adventure genre should also feel welcome with this game.

I don’t know if I’d recommend this version over the PSP one, but there seems to be a few differences such as blood sticking to floors, no voice acting, a mode where you can use weapons in towns. But these differences are cosmetic, I think, and may have been rectified with the recent Steam release of Oath in Felghana. So, all I can say is, if it’s more convenient for you to play it on your PSP, go for it (that version’s great), but if you want to play on a bigger screen and with more customizable controls, then PC would be the way to go.
