Since we're closing in on our first release, I wanted to have a home base for others to keep track of our progress. Right now, we're about 60-80% done on the in-game menus, and 2/240 on the item names. But most importantly, we have our act together. I'll try to keep the top post up-to-date, but I'm not making promises, so check the end of the thread, too, please. We are going to do our best to be as faithful both to the Japanese and to the first title that was brought state-side.

Update!
We've not gotten much further in the menu department, but we are breezing through the items.

Currently:
- No patch posted.
- More than half done with menus.
- 50/240 item names
- No item descriptions or monologue/dialogue yet.

You need to put some screenshots or proof of concepts or something up to keep this in Personal Projects.

On the other hand, if your hacking work is good enough, I'll tear through that item list for you.

Any screenshots at all? How are you going to manage the character restrictions?

Sorry, I forgot some evidence that we are indeed working on things.
Here are a few side by side comparisons of some of what's been done so far:

Since this is our first project modding without fancy tools, we've actually been learning a lot.
And as far as the character restrictions, we've managed to lift those a bit. Our current limitation is the size of the boxes in the menus right now, as you can see here:

But for just starting to apply ourselves in the last week or two, I think we've come quite a ways.

Suggestion: For the love god, do not type words in all caps. That era died back in like...the 90s. We spell words using both cases now.

The addition of the lower case character set is still relatively new. The capitals were actually in the original ROM, so we began the translation with those, and haven't gone through our old work. This is still far from the final version.

Now that you mention it, I can see that. The two cases don't match well. Try picking out a better looking font, too.

All caps is fine on gameboy color in my opinion. Easier to see etc.

Well, we've already decided that, in order to be as true to the original as we can, we are going to use the font that was used in the first game, which is what you see there. The final text, shy of some huge explosion or act of god, will be properly capitalized in the same font that was used in the first game. My wish is for others to pick up our translation, and think it might just have been done by the same team as the first.

Thanks again for bringing this translation back to life; that's gonna be a good year.

@tc - this game has nothing to do with Pokemon.

I know that. :P

I'm just poking a little sarcasm at how similar the menus look.

Yea it kinda does look the same but this game has far more to it than capturing little creatures.

Although this still kinda confuses me.... if this has been out so long why has it taken 9 years for some one to work on it?

I can't promise a good release date for this but i would say some time towards the end of the year. (around dec.-jan. time)

Basically, GB/GBC games just don’t get all that much attention around here. There isn’t much rhyme or reason to it, really.

As far as I know this cartridge is 8 Mbit, it's better to live original ROM size or expand it maximally to 16Mbit (16M should be enough space to handle translation & some extra features, if 'team' plans any) - but that's only my humble opinion.

In all honesty, we haven't looked at the game script as far as the translation goes. Playability is still our main concern, and the script is still on the back burner right now. From what I've seen of things so far, though, there's a goodly chunk if unused space at the end, so we might not even need to expand the ROM.

Also, we have put a sizable dent into Englishifying the items. All of the random effect items now have names (though the descriptions of their effects still remain to be done.) We're on a roll on fixing the items up, so those should get done pretty fast. I'll see what I can do about getting a preliminary patch posted soon.
