ROM Hacks: Ys Book I improvement patch for SMS released
« on: August 22, 2009, 11:33:44 pm »

Update By: kingofcrusher

This is a patch that adds the FM Sound capability back into Ys for the Sega Master System that was taken out when it was translated into English for the US and Europe. In Japan the FM Sound module was originally an optional hardware upgrade for the Sega Mark III (basically the same exact thing we got as the Sega Master System), so many games like Ys supported not only regular PCM music but also the vastly superior FM Sound module. When the games were ported to other territories the FM Sound capability was usually disabled or completely removed.

I've also changed all the names back to their proper Ys names, so no more playing through the whole game as ARON instead of Adol.

The FM sound capacity doesn't work.  It still plays the original music using the Fusion Emulator.

Really? I updated the patch here, maybe you got the old one? The new one should have all the name changes and works under Fusion and Meka (tested on both). I hope I didn't accidentally upload the old version of the patch.

It doesn't work here either. "ADON" is "Adol", but the FM music is absent (tested with Meka)

Thanks for checking for me guys, I accidentally uploaded the wrong patch like a total dumbass. I just checked and the patch I tested on Meka and Fusion is 300 bytes bigger than the one I uploaded here, my mistake. I just submitted the correct one, sorry about wasting your time like that.

I just downloaded the Ys rom off a couple different sites, patched it with this one, and tested it under Meka and Fusion 3.61 and it works perfectly for me.

Pressing the "Start" button resets the game now.  Is that suppose to happen?

No, my bad on that, I was messing with the pause interrupt for some reason and probably forgot to change the code back to what it should be when I was done. I'll fix it for the next release. I'm learning Z80 asm so it's a trial and error thing, but I'll get it working 100% eventually, haha.

For anybody using this- I just uploaded an updated patch which fixes the pause button resetting problem. Apparently the bit of ASM that detects the FM chip is right the middle of something important so I just disabled the pause button altogether since it was completely unnecessary anyway.
