I think this game would have done quite well in the US.

After reading the blog every day, I have to say that much more effort went into this translation than most fan translated games. Thanks for all your hard work Tomato. It was not in vain!

Not only is it a great translation, it seems most of the gamers around here have not only heard of it, they’ve devoured it wholesale over a day or two! Good job.

Which is why Nintendo didn't localize it. ;) I mean, THIS GAME STINKS you know.

Joking aside, I think I read on Tomato's blog or something that Nintendo localized some other game also developed by Brownie Brown as a test to see if Mother 3 was worth localizing. Not only did I not hear anything about the game (I think its called Magical something Star) only a little later and when I did try it out, it didn't feel too good. Why would Nintendo decide to test whether or not to localize a popular game by localizing a game no one's heard of in order to test the American market. In a way, it turns out better this way; Nintendo of America didn't localize the game, they should not receive whatever part of what they usually receive for officially localized games.

Oh yeah, and I beat this game on Friday I think. Really exquisite. I might just replay it on my Wii this time around.

The local anime shop owner’s theory is that Nintendo will officially release the trilogy only when some drunk Sony/Microsoft exec bets them that they can’t make a million dollars in an hour. ;)

While there are certainly more Earthbound/Mother fans than Magical Starsign fans, I think you're overestimating its popularity.  The way fans talk about it, you'd swear it would be up there with Zelda or Final Fantasy.  The fact is, it's an RPG, which makes it a risk right from the start (as opposed to an FPS or DS minigame-fest).  On top of that, it's an esoteric RPG.  Fans love it for exactly that reason, but I think many American RPG fans aren't looking for something like that.  They all seem to want that "it's Medieval but also somehow the future" setting that Square popularized.

In other words, when put in perspective, EarthBound is a cult classic rather than a juggernaut.  No matter, call me an Insane Cultist any day.  Thanks again for this translation (I can't wait to ever have time for it).

Darn... I'm gonna have to agree on that... Most people in America have at least heard of Final Fantasy... on the other hand, Dragon Quest or even Dragon Warrior... that's a whole different story, sadly.

In 8th grade, we had to write a research paper for English class. I chose "Cults" specifically so I could reference that page. True story.

Edit: It's funny because I didn't do any real research. Here's the paragraph:
Quote
In recent times, cults have become much more involved in the media. Sometimes certain groups are called cults without reason. With all of this ‘buzz’ going around, cults are more often showing up in all forms of media. Whether it’s on something serious like “Law and Order”, or something silly like “Family Guy”, they are in all kinds of fiction. Even Starmen.net, a website dedicated to an obscure video game from the early 90’s, has parodied cults. (http://www.starmen.net/cult)
P.S. I know the writing is terrible. And it could be argued that June 1995 was early 90's.

I just finished the game yesterday.  I couldn't put it down.

Thank you, Tomato.  That was a beautiful translation to an excellent game.  :)

I have a problem with the patch, when i click on the windows patcher, it says that I don't have the mother3.ups which IS here. I redownloaded the files several times without success... Sorry to bother but what can I do ?

Never mind, I managed to apply the patch when I extracted the files on the root of the disc.

I'm still gleefully anticipating the release of further translation notes, but I notice the free version of the Handbook is finally up.

One thing that I was most curious about is the deal about those so-called limey mice.  What were they like in the original Japanese version?  And what the heck are they saying in the English version?

While I'm from somewhere a little north of that region, I could probably have a fair go at interpreting, provided someone's got a transcript. I watched a friend play through that part a few days ago, but all I can remember is 'watch out for barney', which just meant 'be careful. (Barney Rubble > Trouble)

Yay, one year old.  Somehow I missed the news about the 1.1 patch in July.

I finally dug that out.  The magic number is 309.  No translation notes there. :(

EDIT: Oh, duh!  I can Google the phrases now that I've found them.
