Translations: Live-A-Live 2.0 Deluxe Released!
« on: May 28, 2008, 08:47:28 pm »

Update By: Gideon Zhi

Not much else to say, really. It's been a long road but we're finally here, and from my *own* experience playing the game today, the wait was damn well worth it. I hope that you all feel the same way!

The new version includes…
  • 560 kilobytes of English script: Twice the size of the original translation!
  • Main dialogue, menu, and battle fonts are now fully proportional!
  • Each chapter now has its own unique font - even the Japanese version can't say this! Live-A-Live now sports a total of ten different fonts.
  • Kung Fu names are now Chinese, not Japanese!
  • Items, techniques, and equipment names expanded dramatically due to new fonts!

Staff Note: The translation patch can also be downloaded locally from RHDN.

I'm very impressed at how professional this translation hack has turned out to be. I don't think an official translation would have been anywhere near the level of what you did. Awesome job!

I can't get the patch to work. I tried it on both unheadered (2,097,152b) and headered (2,097,664b) roms and it didnt work for either. I notice the readme says the headered size should be for me what the unheadered size is, so I won't know WHAT'S wrong.

This happened when I was playing around with RS2 using offsets from a Japanese site, it said no header but the offsets were wrong unless I added one.

Use the rom from Romnation, it works.

Congrats Gid! I'd love to take the time to replay this little gem... unfortunately there's too many other things in my backlog right now. -_- But it looks awesome!

I'm thoroughly impressed by how polished this looks- it's one of those ROM translations that actually look better than anything that could have been officially released.  Great job.

Good work Zhi! I'll have to check this out more.

I did notice a couple nitpicky things right away when I played the caveman chapter.
On the equip screen, for some reason some of the stat text remains when closing the window.
And the menu a couple times took a lot longer to open in bsnes.
But that's just minor things. I look forward to when I have more time to play. :)

Those equip menu tiles are noted - they were an extremely-last-minute addition to the patch, as opposed to mere bad-looking cut-off words. I've fixed a few typos and such as well.

I've already finished that one with the old patch a few years back, but as I remember I'd totally rushed through the final chapter for whatever reason and hadn't done all the dungeons/recruited all the characters (which is quite unusual for me as I tend to be a completist), so this gives me a good reason to go through it again. I'm especially intrigued by the news that the new script is twice as large.

In the Western chapter right now, having quite a bit of fun, thanks to you and your team, Gideon.  Thanks a lot.

Those equip menu tiles are noted - they were an extremely-last-minute addition to the patch, as opposed to mere bad-looking cut-off words. I've fixed a few typos and such as well.

Quick question for you.  Might be too soon to ask or say for any certainty, but anyway: if you release a slightly updated patch (2.01 or whatever), will it be applicable to roms that are already 2.0-patched and have save data, or will it require a fresh rom?  Doesn't matter too much to me, just curious.

Well, then you screwed it up when you submitted the news!

Or it got screwed up by the system when I was editing your malformed list item HTML, in which case it's NightCrawler's fault!

Either way, I deny all responsibility! (And I don't have the ability to edit news, so someone who does will have to fix it. Except it appears they already did, looking at the front page. FTW!)
