Mega Man X5 Improvement Project Addendum has received many updates over the last couple of months, and it's finally been submitted to the database. X4 Undub and X6 Tweaks have also been updated (although with minor stuff), so it's a good time to do an overview of all three projects and bring them to light once again outside of RHDN's forums. It's been too long.

Mega Man X4 UndubProject PageForum Thread

  • What it started as: the author's first project — disc files replacement, guided step-by-step by more experienced hackers. Remained bugged for years.
  • What it is now: the same thing, but more polished, and with a now-well-implemented retranslation. Not much else, mostly because X4 doesn't need it.

Feature highlights:
  • Retranslated script, with a new font and variable font width.
  • Restored opening and ending Japanese themes.
  • Subtitled story videos with Japanese audio.
  • Replaced all character voice clips with the Japanese counterparts, while also restoring some that were cut off from the western version

Mega Man X5 Improvement Project AddendumProject PageForum Thread

  • What it started as: a secondary thing to the original improvement project, mostly focusing on restoring graphics and audio from the japanese version.
  • What it is now: a metric ton of work, close to matching X6 Tweaks' list of features.

Feature highlights:
  • Alia's hints can be turned off from the options menu.
  • Shared Character Life/Energy Upgrades
  • Retranslated script, with a new font and variable font width.
  • Replaced opening and ending theme with the songs from the Japanese version ("Monkey", "Mizu no Naka").
  • Restored missing voice clips from the Japanese version.
  • Title screen background from the Japanese version.
  • Replaced remixed and reused tracks with the unique unused tracks from the official soundtrack (Tidal Whale's Stage, Dr. Light's Theme, Stage Select 2)
  • Mavericks renamed to their Japanese/MMXLC2 names.
  • Exit Stage button always available (except where it couldn't be)
  • Cutscenes can be skipped by pressing START.
  • Incomplete Armors: armors can be selected as soon as you get a part for it, displayed as unarmored X with a custom palette until completed.
  • Enigma/Shuttle RNG Exceptions (Shuttle launch with all 4 parts will always succeed)
  • Parts unlockables at any level.
  • Tidal Whale Stage: faster auto-scrolling segments, shorter/harder miniboss battles.
  • Dark Necrobat Stage: slowdown gimmick removed.
  • Volt Kraken Stage: you only need 7 out of 8 orbs to break the wall.
  • Zero Space 1: the inner walls in the laser segments are now not grabbable.
  • More weapon options to open up and explore areas. Reduces backtracking.
  • Falcon Armor gets a custom Air Dash, with the same properties as the flight move.
  • Gaea Armor can slide down walls by pressing down. Dash speed penalty removed.
  • Dark Hold and F-Splasher can be cancelled.
  • Various damage tables adjustments.
  • Hack customization options available through alternate patches and hex editing instructions.

Mega Man X6 TweaksProject Page (Patch)Project Page (Patcher Tool)Forum Thread

  • What it started as: a tiny tool that really only did like three things, too humble to call itself an improvement project.
  • What it is now: can't remember what it was to play this game without the hack anymore.

Feature highlights:
  • Retranslated script, with a new font and variable font width.
  • Restored missing voice clips from the Japanese version.
  • Title screen background from the Japanese version
  • Custom mugshots
  • Alia's hints and Nightmare Effects can be turned off from the options menu
  • Exit Stage button always available
  • Incomplete Armors: armors can be selected as soon as you get a part for it, displayed as unarmored X with a custom palette until completed.
  • Rescuable Reploids don't disappear permanently. Parts no longer missable.
  • Shared Character Life/Energy Upgrades
  • Rebalanced Rank progression, makes encountering Nightmare Zero Lv.4 possible (and unlocking Black Zero in-game)
  • Guard Shell damage output glitch fixed
  • Stage edits for some of the more infamous parts of the game.
  • All characters/armors can Air Dash
  • Blade Armor's Mach Dash can be cancelled (hold/release input) and can be used either as a regular air dash (no pause, dash button) or normally (with a pause, jump button)
  • Shadow Armor can slide down walls by pressing down
  • Sentsuizan can be cancelled (hold/release input) and has its input remapped
  • Reworked Cheat Codes: combinable, adding a new "start with Zero" mode.
  • Dark Nightmare Effect visibility improved.
  • Various boss attacks and health bar sizes adjustments
  • Various weapons/armor skills adjustments
  • Various damage tables adjustments
  • Hack customization options available through the X6 Tweaks Patcher tool.

What's next

Not much, really. These projects have long since surpassed what they originally set out to be, something still reflected on their names. Though a round of bugfixes for the new releases is to be expected (it always is), and future rounds of new features are not out the question, the bigger leaps have already been done. The projects will most likely remain close to what they are now.

From the author's behalf, thanks to everyone whose enthusiasm for these games kept the projects active for this long, and once again, a shutout to everyone else who contributed:
- the mentor (DarkSamus933, who pioneered work on PS1 MMX games on RHDN)
- the artist (Metalwario64, responsible of making these hacks look more polished than they had any right to be)
- the translators (Hondoori, DuoDynamo) and script editors (NectarHime, Ghaleonh41)
- the tool programmers (gledson9999, whose tools made all the text editing possible; lameguy64, because without mkpsxiso there wouldn't be any of these projects)
- all the RHDN users who painstakenly tested each of these projects' buggy releases on the forums before they found their way to this news page (Aceearly1993, injoon84, pating, etc). You're the reason the projects continued to get polished.
- and a shotout to the CX2 Projects community, my fangame/romhacking venting space these last few months.

It's been a fun ride. The author hopes you enjoy the vision he had for these games — that by shedding out some of the fat, the game's highs would get a better chance to shine. The circumstances that made X5 and X6 be the way they are are well known, but they're still important games for many people. It's been a great pride to contribute to people seeing them in a more positive light.

I know this is not all that related, but is it possible to take the changes made in the Mega Man X3 Zero Project and apply them to the PS1 port? That may not be all that feasible, especially since it wouldnt be restoring any content, rather adding some, but it would prove to be the definitive version for sure.

To this day I'm very humbled and grateful to the people who made this all happen. Seeing my retranslations being enjoyed by so many fans of a franchise I love (especially since it started as nothing more than a personal project for fun), along with all the other improvements that made X6 a much better game, means a lot to me ❤

I've thrown hours and hours to the playtests of numerous X5 mod builds, which I believe everyone else involved within the X5 mod thread also did, cheers that our dreams finally come true!

From what I can get in the discussions of that X3 thread, it's two different worlds in between SNES version and PS1/PC versions, plus the works may have to be built from ground up instead of simply porting things over.

Well, at least we can dream, maybe some day...

Okay, sound stupid but if only there's "definitive" version of PSX X3 by replacing X and zero sprite with X4-X6 sprites... I know there's no max armor sprite with that format though

Awesome work. Though I still wish X6 Tweaks could've nerfed some of the other infamous bosses, like Mijinion, High Max, and Gate.

Forget the PS1 version, put those videos on regular SNES Zero Project using MSU-1!  >:D
(No, don't go bother justin3009 with that, let someone else do it!)

   - Tidal Whale's stage theme changed to the unused track "Deep Sea"

See the "No Music Changes" separate patch variation in the external links which leads to the files collection at archive.org, and there's also a "No Music Changes + Retranslation" patch in that files collection, it might be suitable for your choice.

Hi.

Unfortunately I would like to play with the unused/japanese tracks inserted.

Basically, retranslation + unused/japanese tracks, clips and title screen restoration.

No gameplay changes.
