I can't read the original Xenogears script

Long version: I want to help make a quality Xenogears localization, and I just found a translation tool for Xenogears here http://www.romhacking.net/utilities/464/  It even comes with the script for the original Japanese. Thing is I don't know how to put it into a coherent form. (Also I can't read Japanese and I'm new to romhacking, I'm mostly trying to learn the tool set right now). Does anyone know how of a word processor or recognize this format?

do you have windows set to japanese locale? are you opening these files in whatever encoding theyre probably in (sjis or utf8)? use notepad++ or any other editor which lets you set the encoding in which to view the file

also, how are you going to localize it if you cant read japanese?

I actually don't know how to do that. But I'll try what you suggested. Thanks.

Also you raise a good point. My reasoning is just because I can't do it all by myself doesn't mean I shouldn't start. Maybe if I'm lucky I'll find someone to help me out. Point is I won't know until I try.

I had something doing. Then I tried converting it into sjis. Which did something, but there's still lots of blanks.

You're almost there! That's EUC-JP encoding bytes.

I broke the code! (by accident) I set the encoding to a Chinese character set GB2312 and I got it to work! Now it looks like this:

Thanks to 730 and Momochi for responding to my first forum post on this site.
Also in case I need to learn what it is in the future, what are EUC-JP encoding bytes?

I'm sorry for having written in conjecture. I thought it was encoded in EUC-JP, but the script in the OP really is in GB2312. Perhaps the original ripper messed up something; some Japanese characters in that script are replaced with the Chinese equivalents, which might cause trouble for machine translation.

Somehow I get the feeling machine translation isn't going to understand Xenogears regardless. :P

Don't worry, I have absolutely no intention of using machine translation for a modern localization. My hope is that I get good enough at hacking this game to prove to potential collaborators that I mean more than just wishful thinking.
