[Graphics] [NES] Please help with Zelda 1 graphics editing
« on: June 30, 2020, 12:08:05 pm »
Hello there!

I have previously edited the sign that Link
is holding in the intro text in the first
Zelda game, but that was using NESticle
and it was a bloody hard puzzle that
took a lot of time. Is there a way to
use a graphics editor and get all the
right pieces together so it's easy to
modify the sign? I use the PAL version.

Thank you in advance if you help out!

If it is a nametable and you're not unlucky, then there's a step by step I posted somewhere in these forums about using ppu split, yy-chr and fceux.

NESrocks-san, I don't know if it is, but it's illogical because one tile can contain parts of two different letters instead of just having one letter in one tile... Thank you for your comment!

Cyneprepou4uk-san, thank you for your comment, but it's still a tough puzzle although I only need to get my words right and then I can copy the surroundings from the Japanese version.

It doesn't seem to use tiles more than once for this message.

I used +/- buttons to make the program show tiles correctly. You can see addresses at the bottom. Also using 8x16 sprite mode option.

Open another copy of the program, transfer these tiles there to make a complete picture, change this message and transfer them back.

Cyneprepou4uk-san, there is LL that is cut off at the top and there is a "P" that is also cut off at the top because the rest of it is in some other tiles for example...

I'm sticking with what I've said.

One thing to add is you should look at these tiles like they are 16x16 size. There are 9 of them, and the message itself is 3x3 tiles.

Here's my tutorial on editing Zelda graphics. I'm not talking anything about the sign but perhaps this can be of value anyway.

NES Draug-san, thank you very much, but it is still not enough to help me unfortunately.

 >:D

Took me 5 minutes. And NesDraug's video is pretty good and definitely hits the topic on how to use tile editor to view tiles correctly in this game. Like the voice btw.

First of all, thanks. And secondly, be nice.

I would us Tilemolester as it has a lot of benefits when hacking compared to YYCHR. Like

- bookmark what you find.
- Add pallets from ROM and save them too.
- Share resources.
- More codecs to view tiles as YYCHR.

Navigation is the same as YYCHR.

+ and - key: Shifting bits to align graphics pit plains.
arrow/tab: Navigating page.
CTRL+Arrow Key: Align Window size.
..

https://www.romhacking.net/utilities/991/

quick note:
- When viewing sprites you like to view it row interleaved. This is because the nes uses 2x16 sprite assembly for OAM.
- Tile can be viewed normal. I am aware that this looks puzzling but most tilesets make enough sense to work with it.
- If you like to add a palette just look up the values of the colors in a emulator like Mesen or FCEUX and search the ROM for that value.
Palettes are mostly stored in a table so you find multiple palettes after earch other. Add the offset under Tab: Palette>ImportFromFile>ThisFile

If you like to arrange it you probably need tools like pyxeledit or Pro Motion NG what are tools for graphic editing and tile arrangment.
You could also use Tiled if you just like to arrange tiles and edit graphics elsewhere (probably a poor choice for this task).

I would recommend Pyxeledit:
https://www.pyxeledit.com/
As it was worth the 10 bugs for me many times. I like that it is small and just has the stuff I need. Read try Demo and decide yourself if you like to have it too. It is not needed for the task.

Edit 2:

I forget the topic and to mention how to share your resources haha.. sry

Well TM has a resource folder and it does save the bookmarks with the same name as the ROM you work on. Just copy my files into your resource folder and rename the ROM or the XML file. You said you use pal version and I named that one Legend of Zelda, The (E) (PRG1) [!]. (may be you did not use revision A and you need to add things yourself..) Not really worth sharing as I only added one palette and the picture I worked on ^^ Also added pyxel edit file for fast editing if you have it.

Thank you very much, Bogaabogaa-san! I have tried Tile Molester before, but I wasn't able to use its full potential. Although Graphicus-san already helped me with Link's sign. I haven't heard of Pyxel Edit before, so thank you for that tip. It would be terrific if it was possible to create a program just to edit Link's sign specifically because then it would become easy for all other translators. Have a nice day!
