I always had a Playstation emulator with only a few titles, but I'm getting more into it, especially now that I can use my second Xbox One controller to play PS1 games. I'm trying to track down the games I remember having for that generation, I'll take action, adventure, RPGs, JRPGs (that people translated) fighting games, but no sports.

Sure, I'll give you some suggestions. Gonna ignore the painfully obvious and overhyped ones (Final Fantasy 7, for instance), and also skip ones that have already been suggested. Here we go:

Breath of Fire 3: I have not played 4, but 3 holds a place in my heart, as it was the first PS1 game I got. It's a JRPG, and you don't need to play 1 or 2 first because this is its own story.

Guardian's Crusade: Highly underrated and fun little JRPG where you get a pet monster and collect living toys that help you in battle.

Spyro the Dragon: Surprised this hasn't been mentioned yet. Quite possibly the greatest adventure/platformer on the PS1. It has aged considerably well for its time. Also check out 2 and 3, they are very similar but equally as good.

Threads of Fate: You'll notice a lot of RPGs on my list. Well, that's what PS1 is known for. This one is more an action RPG/platformer.

Soul Blade: The precursor to the SoulCalibur series, and added a new element to fighting games.

There are a few games I haven't played yet that I would probably recommend once I play them (for example, Xenogears and Grandia)

If you're looking for Final Fantasy, 9 is my recommendation. 7 is a classic, but if you didn't play it when it came out, it might be hard to get into. 8 is a love-it-or-hate-it sort of game, and not the best one for newcomers of the series.

- Fear Effect 1 and 2. Resident Evil style, dark sci-fi/cyberpunk, action/adventure games. Amazing.
- Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure. The first game in the RPG series by Nippon Ichi that would set the template for the Disgaea series. Cute isometric tactical RPG with a lot of musical numbers. One of my favorite RPGs for the personality/atmosphere.
- Star Sweep. Arcade style falling blocks puzzle game. Really fun and kind of under-the-radar.
- In the Hunt. Underwater shoot-em-up by folks who would go on to make Metal Slug. Think Metal Slug underwater. An arcade port.
- Builders Block. Vs. puzzle game. Really fun. Also an arcade port.

Also I'll second Threads of Fate. Really fun action RPG from Square. I played the game start-to-finish in one sitting when I bought it new.

EDIT: I almost forgot.
- Ghost in the Shell. One of the best licensed games ever IMO. Kind of a 3D shooter/platformer where you pilot a fuchikoma from the series. Arcade feel. Includes animation and voice acting from the folks responsible for the theatrical feature.

King's Field (US) and King's Field 2 (US) are phenomenal. Precursors to the Souls series. (These are KF2 and KF3J. KF1J has been translated, but it's even more dense than its sequels.) Also Shadow Tower is tangentially related; same dev, same style.

Vandal Hearts is a favorite too.

Everyone is forgetting two great games..... Parappa the Rapper and UmJammer Lammy. Sure they're kinda shallow, but the music and art style are great. Plus overloaded with that Japanese kookyness. One sidenote, I recommend playing Legacy of Kain, but not on PS1. If you plan on playing that game, play on Redream (Dreamcast) emulator instead.
